It adds weight to growing speculation around James' next chapter as he approaches the twilight of his career.
Despite being 41, James remains highly productive and capable of shifting a contender's ceiling.
His current numbers underline that impact: he is averaging 20.9 points, 6 rebounds and 6.9 assists per game this season.
That output keeps his status as an influential player. The question now is where that influence will be felt next.

Stein's report aligns with Golden State's pursuit of established elite talent.
The franchise is prioritising immediate contention over long-term planning.

For instance, they have explored short-term upgrades, including moves for Jimmy Butler and an attempt to land Kawhi Leonard .
The strategy is built around maximising Curry's remaining prime, and pairing James with him would create one of the most talented and experienced duos in NBA history.
However, with the 'Baby-Faced Assassin' at 38, the window is narrowing.
Lakers ' evolving core eases LeBron decision
The situation in Los Angeles became far less dramatic, as Luka Doncic 's outstanding season has confirmed the team's long-term plans.
He remains firmly in the MVP race and is expected to be the franchise cornerstone, which reduces reliance on James as the primary figure.

Austin Reaves has also stepped up with consistent performances. His growth provides additional offensive stability.
Together, those developments give the Lakers flexibility.
They are no longer entirely dependent on James to compete.
