Leeds United have received a timely midfield boost after Ilia Gruev returned to competitive football with the Under-21 side, according to The Leeds Press reporter Kris Sanyal. The 26-year-old played 85 minutes in a 4-4 draw against Middlesbrough Under-21s and supplied the assist for Freddie Lane's 72nd-minute goal, giving Daniel Farke a useful indication of his recovery after a serious knee injury kept him out since April.
Gruev won't play against Newcastle United on Monday, with the club's fitness staff still assessing his condition. That wait makes sense after such a long lay-off. His return, though, gives Farke another midfield option as the season gathers pace. The Bulgarian is entering the final year of his contract, and Sanyal reports that Leeds United could consider selling him in January if both sides fail to agree on an extension.
Yes, but Leeds United should bring him back gradually rather than throw him straight into Premier League starts. Gruev offered real value last season, making 34 appearances in all competitions, playing 2,410 minutes and recording one goal and two assists while completing 88.4 per cent of his passes. Those numbers reflect more than tidy circulation. His game relies on positioning, calm ball movement and progressive ground passing, qualities that can help Farke keep Leeds compact while sustaining pressure.

The problem sits elsewhere. Five months out has changed the midfield picture, and Gruev now faces a fight for minutes. He must show that his knee can handle repeated Premier League contact, recoveries and transitions before Farke can trust him fully. His press resistance and defensive positioning give him a clear route back, yet established midfielders now hold the advantage of rhythm and availability.
Leeds United would take a huge risk by selling Gruev cheaply in January. His profile remains specialised, and replacing a disciplined defensive midfielder during a packed winter schedule could prove harder than the fee suggests. Still, the contract situation complicates matters. Gruev needs to prove durability first, then convince the club that his pre-injury level can return.
Farke may use him heavily in rotation through the autumn, testing that knee while preserving competition for places. If he reproduces his tackle success and low turnover rate, his case for an extension becomes much stronger. For Leeds United, January should be a decision about value, not impatience.
