Lukas Nmecha transfer latest as Leeds United weigh January call
Leeds United are moving towards a significant decision on Lukas Nmecha, with January interest gathering pace and no breakthrough yet reached over a new contract. According to TeamTalk , the striker is attracting attention from Germany and England, leaving Leeds with a familiar dilemma, protect squad depth now or bank a fee before contract leverage slips further.

Nmecha, 27, arrived at Elland Road on a free transfer from Wolfsburg in 2025 and has provided useful depth since. He has scored seven goals in 37 appearances, despite only 10 Premier League starts, and there is recognition inside the club that he has contributed when called upon. The issue, as outlined in the report, centres on role, opportunity and whether Leeds can offer the assurances the player wants.
The report states that "the central issue is playing time" and that Nmecha has been "limited to substitute appearances this season behind Dominic Calvert-Lewin". That appears to be shaping the conversation around his future more than finances alone. TeamTalk adds that "any new deal would require firmer assurances about a more prominent role", a demand Leeds have so far been unable to meet.
Contract talks leave Leeds in delicate position
This is where the situation becomes more urgent. TeamTalk reports that Leeds would still prefer to keep Nmecha and remain hopeful of extending his stay, but the conditions required to make that happen are proving difficult. The club value "his work-rate and contributions off the bench", yet there is a gap between appreciation and the guarantees the player is seeking.

That gap matters because the calendar does too. The report explains that Leeds would "rather avoid" a scenario in which the player can line up his next move freely, and that if an extension cannot be agreed, "the preference at Elland Road would be to secure a fee for him in January, rather than lose him for nothing." That is a clear stance and an understandable one.
At the same time, the club are not in a position to wave through an exit without first addressing their own squad balance. TeamTalk says that Daniel Farke would want "at least one more striker coming in first before sanctioning his exit" and adds that "his exit would depend entirely on an adequate replacement being signed first." In practical terms, that means Leeds are open to business, but only on their terms.
Cologne lead growing Bundesliga interest
FC Köln have emerged as the most concrete overseas option at this stage. TeamTalk reports that the Bundesliga side "have identified Nmecha as a top January target to boost their squad", with injuries in attack increasing the need for reinforcements. For a club looking for experience and immediate impact, the profile makes sense.

There are complications, though. The report notes that "salary demands could prove a barrier" and that while Bundesliga interest is broadening, "multiple Bundesliga sides have expressed an interest, albeit none quite as advanced as Rene Wagner's side." That leaves Cologne prominent in the frame, but not yet in a position where a deal looks straightforward.
There is another important line in the report, "it's understood he would not yet want to drop out of a top five league." That would naturally strengthen the appeal of Germany over a move into the Championship, even if clubs in England can offer a clearer path to regular starts.
Southampton monitoring as English options remain alive
English interest has not disappeared. Wrexham are said to have checked on Nmecha's situation in the summer, only to be turned away as Leeds kept him as cover. TeamTalk says they "remain alert to his situation", while adding that some view "a winter move or a free transfer next summer as realistic options."

Southampton are another club mentioned in the piece, with TeamTalk reporting that they are among those "monitoring developments". That feels notable because it points to a market for Nmecha within England, even if his own preference currently leans towards maintaining top-flight status in one of Europe's major leagues.
For Leeds, the internal calculation looks increasingly sharp. TeamTalk describes the situation as "open by sources", and that feels accurate. There is room for a contract breakthrough, room for a January sale, and room for a stand-off that drifts towards summer. Much may depend on whether Leeds can present either a clearer pathway to minutes or a suitable replacement in the next window.
What is beyond doubt is that the next phase is approaching quickly. As TeamTalk puts it, "clubs seeking a proven goalscorer with top-flight experience are circling, while Leeds must decide whether to meet his demands or sell him in the winter window." That neatly captures where matters stand. Nmecha has suitors, Leeds have a line they do not want to cross, and January is shaping up to be a point of decision rather than a background subplot.
Our View
This feels like one of those situations that can turn messy if it drags on much longer. There is no obvious animosity in it, and that is important, but there is clearly a difference between what the player wants and what Leeds can realistically promise. If Nmecha believes he should be playing more regularly, that is understandable. He has shown enough in flashes to think he can contribute. The problem is that squad hierarchy is earned over time and shaped by availability, form and the manager's trust.

The frustrating part is that he remains useful. Leeds are not overloaded with proven options through the middle, and selling him in January without a replacement would feel reckless. That is why the line about an exit depending on "an adequate replacement being signed first" is the key part of the whole report. It has to be the non-negotiable.
If Cologne or Southampton push harder, Leeds need to be calm and clinical. Either tie him down on sensible terms, or sell for a fee that helps fund a forward who fits the long-term picture better. Letting this drift towards a free departure would be poor business. There is still time to control the outcome, but only if decisions are made early and with conviction.
