Former Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jarvis Landry has revisited his 2018 departure from the franchise, claiming the team's former regime undervalued his production and attempted to push him toward a pay cut.
On the "4th and South" podcast, Landry made it clear that he never wanted to leave Miami. The receiver recalled being asked to accept less money despite his on-field production justifying a bigger contract.
"I did not want to leave from Miami. That was a situation with a coach that he just decided that he was going to try to send me to Cleveland and let my career die and be over with," Landry said.
Landry's frustration stemmed from the value he provided to the team and the salaries of other receivers on the roster. The former Dolphins star said he had made three Pro Bowls and produced nearly double the numbers of his teammate, yet Miami wanted him to take a pay cut to earn a similar amount.
"I want the money that I earned. My money that I earned. And on top of that, you're not gonna pay me the same amount, or pay me less than what you paying somebody in this room that I'm better than. Period," Landry said.
At the time, Landry was coming off a remarkable 2017 campaign in which he led the NFL with 112 receptions. He finished the season with 987 receiving yards and nine touchdowns.
However, Miami placed the franchise tag on Landry rather than securing him to a long-term deal. The Dolphins subsequently traded him to the Cleveland Browns in March 2018, receiving mid-round draft picks in return.
Jarvis Landry Found Success in Cleveland After Dolphins Departure
Adam Gase was the Dolphins' head coach during Landry's final seasons with the franchise. Their relationship had reportedly become tense , with the two appearing to exchange heated words during the 2017 season.
Landry's comments suggest that the disagreement over his contract became a defining factor in his exit. Although he did not want to leave Miami, he felt the organization was unwilling to compensate him according to the market and his production.
His departure ultimately led him to Cleveland, where he continued to perform well.
Landry spent four seasons with the Browns, recording 288 receptions for 3,560 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also earned two additional Pro Bowl selections in Cleveland, which brought his career total to five appearances.
Landry left the NFL in 2022 and now co-hosts the "4th and South" sports podcast alongside former NFL running back Leonard Fournette.
