RC Lens have revealed the thinking behind their deadline-day move for the 26-year-old defender, Jean-Clair Todibo , whose career in England had stalled badly. West Ham United paid close to €40m for him to Nice, yet Lens still brought him back to France without taking on a permanent transfer. L'Équipe reported comments from Lens general manager Benjamin Parrot, with Sport Witness carrying Sean Lunt's report.
Parrot said Lens seek gifted players who have experienced failure, doubt or a difficult spell because those experiences can produce extra maturity, self-awareness and hunger. Florian Thauvin , Michaël Cuisance and Odsonne Édouard provide examples of the club's approach, while the move gives the defender a chance to rebuild his standing in Ligue 1 and compete in Europe. Lens offered what Parrot called "pure football therapy": the club give full support, provided the player accepts hard work, humility and the collective rules.
"Having faced failure or doubt in one's career creates a strong basis for meshing with our environment," he explained.
"Thanks to our values, we know we can get a player back onto the fast track. Someone who had access to it through talent but was forced to take a detour onto a secondary road.
"We love these players. Because, beyond their talent, their life experiences often give them added maturity, greater self-awareness, and a heightened hunger that aligns perfectly with our DNA.
"Normally, these guys would be financially out of reach. What we offer them is a form of pure football therapy, based on a clear moral pact.
"If a player comes here to rebuild their career through hard work and humility, we will give them everything. But if they step outside the established team framework, they will have to answer to us."
West Ham United can reasonably question the logic of letting a centre-back from such a major investment leave on loan, particularly after a season in which his performances never settled. He made 28 appearances across competitions in 2025/26, but he never nailed down a regular role, and his adaptation to English football remained uneven.

The issue sits in the balance between protecting an asset and building a squad. His market value needs football, not isolation. Sitting outside matchday squads at the start of this season offered neither rhythm nor a convincing shop window. Lens can change that by giving him minutes, pressure and a familiar league where he previously looked far more assured.
For West Ham United, risk remains because a successful revival could make the loan look costly if defensive depth deteriorates. Yet keeping an out-of-form defender simply because of the fee already paid creates a problem. Sunk costs don't defend crosses.
Lens have bought an opportunity rather than a player permanently, and that matters. They can test whether the old Ligue 1 version returns without committing another major sum, while the defender gets a route back into serious football. West Ham United have effectively handed that rehabilitation project to someone else.
Lens needed an experienced centre-back after Malang Sarr left, so it solves an immediate squad problem while giving the Frenchman a stage to repair his reputation. For West Ham United , the calculation rests on one uncomfortable hope: that someone else's football therapy can restore that asset.
