Most athletes slow down as the years pile up. Fast legs usually fade and sharp reflexes dull. Yet one soccer star keeps ignoring that rule, and the proof keeps growing with every single new season.
That star is Lionel Messi. He turned heads long ago with his dribbling, but his real gift is making teammates better. Fans everywhere now watch him with a genuine mix of pure joy and disbelief.

Messi reaches another assist milestone in 2026
Inter Miami clinched a playoff spot on October 14 with a 2-0 victory over New York City FC. Lionel Messi made another important contribution, helping set up Rodrigo De Paul's goal in first-half stoppage time.
The assist offered another reminder of Messi's remarkable creativity at 39. Even after decades at the highest level, he continues to make decisive contributions for his teammates.
Creating scoring opportunities consistently requires vision, timing and precision. Messi has demonstrated those qualities throughout his career, and his latest performance showed why he remains one of soccer's most influential playmakers.

Why assists matter as much as goals
Goals win headlines. Assists win games quietly. A great pass opens a tight defense and gives a teammate a clear look at the net. Messi has built a legendary career on that special passing skill.
An assist needs timing and trust. The passer must see the gap before it opens. The receiver must be ready to run. Messi reads those moments much faster than most defenders can ever really react.
That is why his creative side deserves as much praise as his scoring. Anyone can admire a spectacular long shot. It takes a truly rare mind to find the pass that nobody else sees coming.

A World Cup run that stunned fans
Messi delivered another memorable performance at the 2026 World Cup, helping Argentina reach the final against Spain. His influence was especially clear in the semifinal, when he provided 2 assists in Argentina's dramatic 2-1 victory over England.
By the end of the tournament, Messi had accumulated 12 World Cup assists across his career, the highest total in Opta's historical records covering the competition since 1966. His creativity remained an essential part of Argentina's attack.
Those contributions came under enormous pressure. In the semifinal, Messi helped create both Argentina goals, including Lautaro Martínez's stoppage-time winner. Even at 39, he continued to deliver on soccer's biggest stage.

Making history across 6 World Cups
Messi became the first player to register an assist at 6 different World Cups, extending a remarkable record that began with his tournament debut in 2006. His achievement highlights an extraordinary level of consistency across 2 decades.

Each tournament revealed a different side of his talent. Younger Messi often relied on explosive dribbling and quick changes of direction. As his career progressed, his passing, positioning and ability to control the tempo became increasingly important.
Remaining influential across so many tournaments requires exceptional adaptability. Messi adjusted his game as he grew older while maintaining his ability to create opportunities for Argentina.
Little-known fact:Messi's assist against Switzerland in the 2026 World Cup quarterfinal came from a corner kick that Alexis Mac Allister headed into the net. The goal helped Argentina secure a 3-1 victory and advance to the semifinals.
Inter Miami thrives with Messi running things
Messi has transformed Inter Miami into a trophy-winning team. Since his arrival in 2023, the club has won the Leagues Cup, the MLS Supporters' Shield and the MLS Cup, with Messi playing a central role in those achievements.

His influence extends beyond scoring. Against New York City FC on October 14, Messi helped create Rodrigo De Paul's goal in first-half stoppage time. The move demonstrated how his vision and precise passing continue to benefit his teammates.
Inter Miami has secured its place in the 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs. Another successful postseason run could add another major trophy to Messi's collection and extend the remarkable success he has enjoyed since arriving in South Florida.
Barcelona almost passed on young Messi
Barcelona gave the 13-year-old Messi a trial in 2000. His technical ability impressed evaluators, but his small stature and physical development created doubts about whether the club should sign him.

The assessments were divided. One evaluator recommended against signing Messi because of his physical limitations, while another compared the young Argentine to Diego Maradona and recommended bringing him into the club.
Barcelona ultimately moved forward with the deal. Carles Rexach, who was the club's director of football at the time, played a decisive role and famously committed to signing Messi in an agreement written on a napkin. The decision began one of the most celebrated careers in Barcelona history.
Saying goodbye to the Argentina shirt
Messi retired from international soccer in late August. The decision came after Argentina narrowly lost the World Cup final to Spain in extra time. His national team story now has a complete and fitting ending.

Argentina fans will never forget what he gave them over the years. He ended long, painful years of heartbreak and brought home World Cup and Copa América glory. That legacy will outlast any single record.
He still plays for Inter Miami today, so fans can keep enjoying his beautiful passes. His club career is not finished yet. The assist machine keeps running, and the whole league keeps watching in awe.
