A fifth-round pick would bring Cobie Durant to Detroit in a new trade proposal. I understand the appeal, although I think the Lions should try to get the price down.
The NFL trade deadline is 15 days away, and there are bound to be many stories flying around trying to pin a cornerback to the Detroit Lions' tail in an effort to try to predict what this team actually winds up doing. Some are going to be good, and others are going to be bad.
I'm not totally sure where I sit with this one, and I might actually talk myself into or out of it in this story.
The guys on our 13 personnel podcast suggested this one , and you can understand why. This is the thing the Lions need the most. I mean, this quote from Titans beat writer Easton Freeze says it all, right?"
"I think any cornerback with legs and arms is a good thing for the Lions to invest in,"

Here's the thing, I somewhat participated in this project. Early Monday morning, host Austin Stanley reached out to me and asked what the Lions needed and what I felt they were willing to spend. That's how you get Drurant in Detroit.
The former fourth-round pick spent the first four years of his career with the Rams before signing a one-year, $5.5 million deal with the Cowboys this offseason. Durant isn't the biggest corner in the world at 5-foot-11, but he's a guy who has a nose for the football. He had three interceptions during the regular season in 2025 and then added three more during the playoffs. That's six interceptions in one season if you're counting the postseason. He's also got experience playing both outside and in the slot, something the Lions tend to like in their corners.
The question with Durant right now is his health. He's played in just three games for the Cowboys this season after suffering a hamstring injury in Week 2, and that's something the Lions are going to have to consider. He did return in Week 7, but only played 10 snaps. Part of that is because the Cowboys went out and traded for Joey Porter since the injury.
He's also not a shutdown corner who's going to come in and completely change your secondary. What he can do is give you an experienced defensive back who has shown that he can create turnovers and play multiple roles. For the Lions, that's something that could be pretty valuable. The other thing to consider here is that Durant is playing on a one-year deal, so there wouldn't be a long-term financial commitment involved. At the end of the day, it feels more like the Lions might be interested in that than they would be in trading for someone they need to tie themselves to. The expectation at this point is that they're probably going to get seriously involved in fixing their secondary in the offseason.
Ultimately, I would think the better move would be to offer a sixth. If the Lions could get that done, then I see the benefit here. But you do have to be concerned with the hamstring issue. You also have to know the Cowboys would even be willing to do this deal. I still think the Colts are the team to watch.
