As the 2026 NFL free agency period continues to unfold, the Detroit Lions see their special teams captain, Grant Stuard , depart for the West Coast as he has signed a two-year deal worth up to $5.05 million with the Los Angeles Rams , according to NFL insider Aaron Wilson.
The move comes after Detroit declined to extend the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ' 2021 seventh-round linebacker, who signed a one-year, $1.7 million deal with the Lions last year.
In his lone season in Detroit, the Lions immediately had plans to use Stuard as a kick returner due to the league's new dynamic kickoff. After a few weeks, the Lions opted to move him off that role and into other special teams roles. As a high-energy and maximum effort player, he tallied a team-high 375 special teams snaps and finished the year with 19 tackles in all 17 games played.
Losing Stuard will leave a pretty big special teams hole on the Lions' roster and further complicates the linebacker depth with just Jack Campbell, Derrick Barnes , Malcolm Rodriguez , and Trevor Nowaske under contract for the 2026 season.
