After consecutive four-win seasons, the New England Patriots are headed back to the Super Bowl for a record 12th time.
First-year coach Mike Vrabel’s dramatic franchise turnaround has the Patriots playing for the NFL title once via an 10-7 win over the Denver Broncos on the road Sunday.
Vrabel’s crew punched its Super Bowl ticket by doing something the Patriots have never done before - win a postseason game in Denver.
Sunday’s game started with cold, sunny weather and finished in driving, snow and sloppy conditions.
Both touchdowns came in the clear conditions during the first half and Andy Borregales converted a 23-yard field goal late in the third quarter to wrap up the scoring. From there, it was blizzard conditions and neither offense was able to move the ball.
Drake Maye ran in from 6 yards out late in the second quarter for New England ’s lone touchdown. The score came after a Denver turnover deep in its own territory.
Jarrett Stidham - starting for injured Bo Nix - hit Courtland Sutton for a 6-yard TD to open the scoring in the first quarter.
The Patriots will look to win their NFL record seventh Super Bowl championship on Sunday, Feb. 8 against either the Seattle Seahawks or the Los Angeles Rams . New England is tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the most titles with six each.
