Liverpool memories resurface as Iago Aspas opens up about possible Retirement

For many Liverpool supporters, watching familiar names edge closer to Retirement brings a mixture of nostalgia and reflection. Another former Red could soon be preparing to step away from the game, with Iago Aspas hinting that the 2025/26 campaign might be his final season in professional football.

The Spanish forward, now back at Celta Vigo where he has built legendary status, spoke openly about his future during a recent interview. While he stopped short of confirming anything, his words suggested that a decision may not be far away.

"I don't know. As you well know, I haven't set a date. It will depend on how I feel. I have a very good relationship with Marco (Garcés). When I make a decision I will talk about it with him or we will have a coffee. Whether it's one way or the other, I'll be eternally grateful," he said.

"I handle the [physical aspect] quite well. It is true that football is more physical now than it was 8, 10 or 15 years ago. I'm feeling good and participating in almost every game, whether it's in many of them as a starter and in others a little less from the bench. I'm very happy."

Those comments underline a player still enjoying his football, yet fully aware that time waits for no one.

Liverpool spell remembered

When Iago Aspas arrived at Liverpool in the summer of 2013, expectations were quietly high. Signed from Celta Vigo for around £7m, he was viewed as a smart attacking option who could complement Luis Suárez and Daniel Sturridge during an exciting period at Anfield.

Reality proved far more complicated. The Premier League demanded a level of physical intensity that took time to adjust to, and opportunities became limited as Brendan Rodgers settled on a settled attacking core. Injuries disrupted any momentum, leaving Aspas with only one goal for Liverpool, scored in an FA Cup match against Oldham Athletic, and no league goals across 14 appearances.

Despite the modest return, his brief time on Merseyside still forms part of the wider Liverpool story, particularly for supporters who remember that dramatic 2013/14 season when the club came so close to silverware.

Celta Vigo future still undecided

Back in Spain, Aspas rediscovered confidence and consistency, becoming the heartbeat of Celta Vigo's attack. His performances transformed him into a club icon, a player valued as much for leadership as for goals. Now, as Retirement edges closer, the decision appears deeply personal rather than purely physical.

He remains involved in most matches, sometimes starting, sometimes contributing from the bench, suggesting that his role has evolved alongside his experience. Players who rely on intelligence and positioning often extend their careers longer than expected, and Aspas seems comfortable balancing contribution with longevity.
