For Rush, Liverpool's greatest goalscorer, the teenager's emergence has been particularly satisfying. Having watched Koumas closely during pre-season, the former striker believes his compatriot possesses qualities that could make him an important figure at Anfield.
There is, however, a question about where those qualities are best utilised.
Ian Rush Impressed by Lewis Koumas in Liverpool Training

His performances have attracted attention, particularly during Liverpool's defeat against Manchester City, when his energy and willingness to press offered encouragement.
Rush, who observed the youngster during pre-season preparations, has been impressed by his application and attitude.
"He's fantastic for Liverpool and Wales, he always gives 100% in every game. I saw in pre-season that he was absolutely fantastic. I watched him in training."
That endorsement carries considerable weight. Rush understands the demands placed upon Liverpool forwards, having built his extraordinary career around intelligent movement, relentless work and ruthless finishing.

Liverpool Face Important Decision Over Koumas' Best Position
Perhaps the most interesting element of Rush's assessment concerns the youngster's suitability as a central striker.
"I wouldn't say he's a No.9, because he doesn't get hold of the ball that much. He works so hard for the team, he's well worth his place."
It is an observation worth considering.
Koumas has previously operated from the left and in attacking midfield, positions that allow him greater freedom to exploit space and press defenders without consistently having to compete physically against established centre-backs.

Iraola's system demands considerable intensity from its forwards, making Koumas an attractive option while Liverpool navigate their injury problems.
Yet developing his technical qualities and positional understanding will be equally important.
There is a danger in asking a promising youngster to become whatever the senior squad happens to require. Liverpool must ensure his immediate usefulness contributes towards his long-term development.
Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike Shape Liverpool's Plans
The circumstances surrounding Koumas' opportunity are significant.
Ekitike's Achilles injury has created a substantial gap in Liverpool's attacking options, while Isak's injury history means managing the Swedish international's workload remains essential.

Isak has started the campaign impressively, establishing himself as the club's leading attacking reference point.
When Ekitike eventually returns, Koumas may find opportunities through the middle considerably more limited.
Nevertheless, his versatility could prove valuable across a demanding domestic and European schedule.
Liverpool also possess considerable attacking midfield talent, including Florian Wirtz and Dominik Szoboszlai, meaning competition for places will remain fierce.
Meanwhile, academy prospect Will Wright continues to impress and could eventually provide another option.
For Koumas, the immediate priority is straightforward. Continue contributing, embrace the opportunities presented by Iraola and demonstrate that his performances deserve further recognition.
Rush has already identified the qualities that make him valuable. Liverpool's challenge now is ensuring those qualities develop into something sustainable.
