Liverpool set for battle with Bayern Munich for French midfielder
Liverpool Transfer News: Manu Kone Interest Grows as Bayern Munich Join Midfield Race
Liverpool are already shaping their thinking for the January window, and one midfield name has reappeared on the radar, Manu Kone. According to Calciomercato, Bayern Munich are now tracking the Roma midfielder closely, adding another heavyweight to a situation that may yet develop quickly.

There has been prior interest from Liverpool in the France international and that background matters. Clubs do not tend to revisit profiles unless the fit still makes sense, and Kone clearly ticks a number of boxes. At 25, he sits in that useful bracket between development and ready-made quality, while his role under Gian Piero Gasperini has underlined both his reliability and his tactical value.
Liverpool's midfield picture still feels open. Alexis Mac Allister's situation has invited some uncertainty and, with Andoni Iraola still assessing where his squad needs greater balance, it would be no surprise if central midfield becomes a serious point of focus. Julian Ward's return also suggests a sharper, more opportunistic market approach if the right opening appears.

Manu Kone battle could test Liverpool approach
Roma do not want to lose Kone and his contract runs until 2029, which leaves them in a strong position. That does not close the door completely. If Bayern Munich move in January with a major proposal, the pressure changes and the market can move around them.
There is, however, a complication in the short term. Kone has suffered a grade-one thigh injury and is expected to miss three to four weeks, a setback that interrupts his momentum for both club and country. Roma will feel that absence acutely given his standing in their midfield setup, and France may also have to plan without him for the coming internationals.
January transfer window may hinge on Bayern Munich pressure
For Liverpool, the key question is whether they would engage in a bidding war. Historically, the club have preferred to avoid major mid-season outlay unless circumstances demand it. Yet there is precedent for moving decisively when elite competition threatens a preferred target. That memory remains relevant here.

If Bayern formalise their interest, Liverpool may need to decide whether Kone is simply admired, or actively wanted. That distinction could define the January transfer window.
Our View
Kone feels like the sort of link that makes sense on paper, but it is hard to know whether this is a live pursuit or one of those names that keeps circling because the profile suits Liverpool. The age is right, the level is strong and there is obvious quality there, but January always changes the calculation. Roma have no reason to sell cheaply and Bayern Munich entering the picture would only inflate everything.
That is probably where the uncertainty kicks in. Liverpool may well need another midfielder, especially if there is any doubt around Mac Allister, but spending big in the middle of a season can be awkward unless the club are absolutely convinced. Kone looks good enough to improve the squad, yet a bidding war with Bayern for a player under contract until 2029 sounds difficult to control.

There is also the question of timing. Iraola is still putting his own stamp on this group, and it would be easy to argue that any major midfield decision should be part of a bigger summer reset rather than a January rush. At the same time, if the recruitment team believe Kone is the right fit, waiting can carry its own risk. That is what makes this one intriguing, but still hard to read with total confidence.
