Calvin Ramsay Given Liverpool Lifeline as Andoni Iraola Resets Right-Back Picture

Calvin Ramsay has spent four years in limbo. Injuries, loan moves, false starts, all of it has left him on the fringes since arriving from Aberdeen in 2022. Now there is a change in the air at Liverpool, and for Ramsay it may finally matter.

Andoni Iraola has taken over at Anfield and, with that, every player starts again. For Ramsay, that matters more than most. He has been with the first-team squad throughout pre-season and, for once, the situation looks simple. Impress the new head coach, fit the system, stay in the picture.

Andoni Iraola Brings Fresh Chance

Iraola's football is demanding. It requires pressing, aggression and full-backs who can cover ground and contribute at both ends. On paper, that suits Ramsay. He is an attacking right-back by trade, and that profile has a place in this setup if he can stay fit and reliable.

Ramsay has made it clear he is enjoying the work when speaking to liverpoolfc.com . "I've enjoyed it. It's really intense and he wants us constantly pressing and being aggressive and being able to defend and attack. It's been good – I've enjoyed it. It's obviously only been a few weeks so hopefully I can stay here for a little bit longer and keep working with him and keep learning and get better."

That last part is the key. He wants to stay. After enough temporary exits to lose count, there is no appetite for another stop-gap move.

Calvin Ramsay Loan Spells Solved Nothing

Preston North End, Bolton Wanderers, Wigan Athletic and Kilmarnock all came and went. None of those spells gave Ramsay the sustained minutes required to build any momentum. Injuries wrecked parts of his time at Preston and Bolton, and the later moves did little to restore his standing.

Last season summed it up. Liverpool had problems at right-back and still he was overlooked. Arne Slot preferred makeshift options, including midfielders filling in, rather than trust Ramsay with meaningful minutes. That told its own story.

Liverpool Right-Back Battle Starts Again

Now the slate is clean. Iraola has no investment in the old pecking order. He will judge what he sees. If Ramsay can handle the physical load, train well and show he suits the press-heavy structure, there is a route back.

This is not about sentiment. It is about utility. Liverpool need depth, and Ramsay needs a season that finally goes somewhere. For the first time in a while, those two interests may align.
