Harvey Elliott's Valencia Struggles Deepen After Costly Red Card in Villarreal Defeat
Harvey Elliott's difficult spell away from Liverpool has taken another damaging turn, with the midfielder dismissed during Valencia's 2-1 defeat to Villarreal in a moment that summed up how badly this latest loan move is going.

According to Planet Football , Elliott was introduced with 20 minutes remaining in the Derbi de la Comunitat as Valencia looked to seize control of a game that was level at 1-1. Villarreal had already been reduced to 10 men after Pape Gueye saw red, and the conditions seemed set for Elliott to influence the contest. Instead, he lasted only a matter of moments before collecting two bookings in rapid succession, both appearing to stem from dissent, leaving Valencia down to 10 men as well.
There was a further sting in the tail. With parity restored in numbers, Villarreal pushed on and claimed the winner deep into stoppage time, adding another layer of frustration to a night that quickly became about Elliott for all the wrong reasons.
Valencia loan move slipping away
This was meant to be a reset. After a frustrating previous campaign, Elliott's switch to Valencia offered the promise of regular football, a new environment and the chance to rebuild his standing. Instead, his situation appears increasingly fragile.

He has managed only limited minutes in La Liga so far, with game time hard to come by and momentum impossible to establish. Reports in Spain have already pointed to concern around his physical condition after arriving at the club, while the managerial upheaval has done little to create stability. Carlos Corberan, who played a significant role in bringing Elliott in, was removed after a poor start to the season, and successor Javier Aguirre has yet to find a meaningful role for him.

That matters because the wider context is already bleak. Valencia are hovering near the foot of the table, short on wins and operating in an atmosphere where every result heightens scrutiny. For a player trying to reassert himself, it is a difficult setting in which to find rhythm.

Javier Aguirre faces Elliott problem
Valencia's latest setback leaves Aguirre with another issue to manage, and his post-match comments made clear how unhappy he was with the incident. "It's absurd, ridiculous. I've already made that clear to him," Aguirre said after full time. He then added: "It's not his fault, it's mine for picking the players I pick. I decide who plays and how they play. I'll speak to him."
That response felt part reprimand, part attempt to shield the player. Yet the reality is that Elliott now finds himself further from a solution. Liverpool have reportedly already been in contact to assess how best to get his career back on track, and that conversation will only become more urgent after this episode.
Elliott remains young, and talent has never been the question. But football can move quickly when opportunities are missed and confidence starts to erode. Right now, his Valencia loan is drifting, his standing has weakened again, and the challenge is becoming less about proving potential and more about halting a decline that has become difficult to ignore.

Our View
This is painful to watch because Harvey Elliott always felt like one of those players supporters wanted to succeed more than most. He had personality, bravery on the ball and that sense that a big moment could arrive whenever he drifted into space around the box. Seeing his career go this way, one stalled move after another, is bleak.
What makes it worse is that there have been genuine reminders of his quality. Winning Player of the Tournament for England Under-21s was not some minor achievement. It showed there is still a footballer in there capable of deciding games. That is why this latest red card feels so alarming. When things are going against you, discipline and mentality have to be the foundations, and in that moment both seemed to desert him.
Liverpool need clarity on what comes next. Another half-season of limited minutes and mounting noise helps nobody. If Valencia cannot offer a stable path back to form, then a change will have to be considered quickly. The club have seen talented players drift before, and Elliott cannot become another case of promise left behind by circumstance and poor decisions.
There is still time, but it is running faster than anyone would have expected. What once looked like a temporary wobble is starting to resemble a career crossroads.
