The Utah Mammoth have evened their Stanley Cup Playoffs series with the Vegas Golden Knights . For the Mammoth, it was their first playoff win in franchise history .
Logan Cooley scored the game-winning goal with just six minutes left in the third period as the Mammoth won 3-2. After the game, Cooley spoke to the media about the win, per Paul Delos Santos of NHL.com.
“It’s awesome. It’s nice to get to win,” Cooley said. “It’s tough to score in this League. That was the main focus of getting to the front of the net, letting our ‘D’ get through, and that’s where greasy goals are scored.”
The Golden Knights struck first in Game 2, with a powerplay goal from Mark Stone. MacKenzie Weegar would tie the game in the period, though. In the second period, Dylan Guenther scored to give the Mammoth the lead, but Ivan Barbashev tied the game just over a minute later. With the game still tied in the third period, Guenther rang a shot off the post that that Cooley collected and then beat Carter Hart to get the goal.
“We talked about building speed through the middle, and we’re a fast line,” Guenther said. “I heard ‘Cools,’ but I didn’t see him, so I just wanted to attack the net and break them down. It’s a lot of greasy goals in the playoffs.”
With the goal, Cooley has scored in both games in the series , becoming the youngest American player in NHL history to score in each of his first two playoff games.
The series will now head to Utah, as the Mammoth will host their first playoff game in franchise history, and head coach Andre Tourigny knows how important it was to get their first win.
“If you want to win a series, you need to start winning at some point,” Tourigny said. “Obviously, we want to win every game, but we try to keep a really here-and-now mindset.”
Game 3 is set for Friday night with a 9:30 pm ET puck drop.
