The Minnesota Wild have kicked off their 2026-27 season, but have recently dropped the first two games of their current road trip. They are dealing with injuries early , and none is more significant than Brock Faber's fractured skull .
While John Hynes continues to work to hold things together, it's been tough sledding to start the year. Superstar defenseman Quinn Hughes has paired with Jared Spurgeon to anchor the top pair. It wasn't long ago that Matt Dumba was doing that for the Wild.
Now after 13 years in the league, he is officially hanging up his skates and has announced his retirement.
MN Wild favorite Matt Dumba is done
The Saskatchewan native was picked 7th overall by Minnesota during the 2012 entry draft. He played a whopping 748 games at the NHL level, but now at 32 years old, Dumba officially filed his retirement paperwork.

Last season Dumba played for the Pittsburgh Penguins, but he appeared in just 11 games and scored only three points. Otherwise a relatively consistent contributor, Dumba scored 79 goals across 598 games with Minnesota. He added 157 assists and blocked 699 shots.
Following the 2019-20 season, Dumba won the King Clancy Memorial Trophy which is presented to the player who "best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community." Following in the footsteps of Jason Zucker before him, it gave the Minnesota Wild back-to-back winners. Marcus Foligno took home the honors last season.
Dumba earned just shy of $50 million over the course of his career, and can now focus on different pursuits. Still just 32 years old, he has plenty of runway ahead of him to continue making an impact on the sport if he so chooses.
After a Saturday matchup against Florida on the road to end a three-game trip, the MN Wild will return home Monday to face the Vegas Golden Knights.
