When it comes to sheer basketball talent and unstoppable offensive skills, Luka Doncic is as sure a thing as there's ever been in the NBA. A 6'6" point guard who uses his size, savvy and remarkable court vision to dominate defenses every which way, the Slovenian superstar has firmly established himself as one of the premier playmakers in the league.
However, there have been a couple of things that have nagged fans, analysts, and even young and old players about Doncic's game. One glaring lack of effort he puts into defense in every game. The other is how he whines and complains to refs, seemingly on every trip down the floor.
It was again on full display in the Los Angeles Lakers ' recent blowout loss at the hands of the Boston Celtics ; it was so egregious that popular sports commentator Max Kellerman commented that if one day he were to get a statue made in front of the Crypto.com Arena, it would depict him complaining to the referees.
Spends so much time complaining
To be fair, Luka is one of the most dominant players of this generation, standing alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Nikola Jokic at the top. As brilliant as he can be on offense, watching him carry on a conversation with the game officials all game long is a lot like listening to nails being scratched across a chalkboard.
The recent game against the Boston Celtics was a prime example of this, as Doncic was seen complaining to the refs on one play, even after he hit a three-pointer that left his matchup wide open for an easy layup on the other end.
"You know what Luka's statue is going to be if he ever gets one outside his crypto? It's going to be like this (mimics Luka pleading his case to the refs)," Kellerman told Rich Paul on the "Game Over" podcast. "This is the Luka statue — like this, with his arms out like this."
"Because every single trip down the floor, you're complaining to the refs. Every trip down the floor," Max continued. "You're complaining even when he hits the shot. No, you're not gonna get the and-one. It can't be that the refs blow every call on Luka."
A complete waste of energy
This isn't the first time that a prominent personality has called Luka out for this behavior. In fact, many have criticized the young star for his constant complaining to the referees during games. One of those is Lakers legend Derek Fisher , who won five titles with the Purple and Gold.
A hard-nosed guard who never backed down from any challenge, D-Fish implied that constant complaining to the refs is such a waste of time and energy and takes focus away from what Luka should be doing: getting back on defense.
"How many times is he talking to referees, or how many times is his energy just completely focused on the next defensive possession. There's no time to talk to referees," said Fisher.
Luka is, without a doubt, an unbelievable talent who the Lakers will look to build around. However, unless he decides to drastically change his ways and focus on playing basketball rather than officiating the game himself, he will never reach the level of success that other former Lakers legends did.
