Luke Raley, J.P. Crawford Homers Lead Seattle Mariners to 5-4 Win Over Atlanta Braves
SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners entered Monday on a three-game skid after getting swept the previous series, and looked en route to losing a fourth-straight game against the Atlanta Braves on Monday at T-Mobile Park.
Instead, the Mariners (17-19) scored five unanswered runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to win 5-4 against the Braves.
Seattle found itself down 4-0 to Atlanta after the top of the sixth. All of the Braves' runs came via a series of solo home runs against Mariners starting pitcher Logan Gilbert .
The first solo shot came courtesy of lead-off hitter and designated hitter Drake Baldwin in the top of the first.
Atlanta maintained a 1-0 lead after Seattle left the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth.
In the top of the sixth, the Braves uncorked a trio of solo homers. Second baseman Ozzie Albies was responsible for the first, first baseman Matt Olson had the second and third baseman Austin Riley hit the third to bolster Atlanta's advantage to 4-0.
"They say solo homers won't beat you," Gilbert said in a postgame interview. "Four of them is not ideal but I guess it held true tonight. Offense stepped up big time. Bullpen and all that. ( Leo Rivas ) made some good plays at third. Just all-in-all, I thought it was a good team win all the way around."
In the bottom of the sixth, Mariners left fielder Randy Arozarena and designated hitter Dominic Canzone both drew walks to lead off the inning.
Right fielder Luke Raley brought himself and the aforementioned two around the bases with a three-run homer to right field that cut Seattle's deficit to 4-3.
Raley's homer snapped a 1-for-24 cold spell. He credited working with team senior director of hitting strategy and National Baseball Hall of Famer Edgar Martinez for helping him with adjustments.
"You can't just take one game and be like 'oh my swing's messed up,' and start changing things," Raley said after the game. "It stinks but sometimes you have to go through a stretch like that to start making some adjustments because you don't want to be too trigger-happy on things like that. It got to the point where I was consistently missing some pitches that I didn't feel like I should be missing. Just talked to Edgar a little bit about it. ... I've just been kind of going to him and picking his brain. That's something we were working on yesterday."
Raley's blast marked the end of the night for Braves starting pitcher and Bainbridge Island, Wash., native JR Ritchie. Atlanta reliever Tyler Kinley took the mound after Ritchie and the Mariners' success continued.
Catcher Mitch Garver drew a walk between two strikeouts from second baseman Cole Young and third baseman Leo Rivas.
With Garver at first and facing a full count with two outs, shortstop J.P. Crawford hit a two-run shot to right field to give the Mariners a 5-4 lead for the eventual final.
"We talk about answering back about giving up some runs," M's manager Dan Wilson said after the game Monday. "Guys doing a great job today jumping right back into that thing and taking the lead. ... We push the envelope, we get guys on base and tonight we were able to convert those into runs and just some really strong team at-bats there up-and-down the lineup."
Seattle's trio of relievers, Jose A. Ferrer, Eduard Bazardo and closer Andres Munoz shut the door on the Braves to preserve the one-run lead and win.
The three struck out a combined four batters in three innings pitched and allowed a collective three hits. Munoz earned his seventh save in nine opportunities.
The Mariners will look to earn the series win against Atlanta in game two of the three-game set at 6:40 p.m. PT on Tuesday at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.
George Kirby will start for Seattle and Bryce Elder will start for the Braves.
