The hunt is on for a new head coach for the Orlando Magic following the firing of Jamahl Mosley . Lately, the rumor is that Billy Donovan is a top candidate for the position.
Although he denied the position after being hired in 2007 . Nevertheless, the Magic may be willing to take another chance on him per Marc Stein of The Stein Report. More than anything, the Magic are looking to bring on an experienced coach.
"Billy Donovan continues to be a mentioned a strong candidate for the Orlando vacancy … even though the team is still owned by the DeVos family," Stein wrote. "Surely no one in Central Florida has forgotten that Donovan accepted the job in June 2007 before asking to be released from the new post so he could return to the University of Florida. Yet it's likewise true that the Magic's known preference is hiring an experienced coach to succeed Mosley. Donovan and Tom Thibodeau are the most obvious candidates in that category after Michael Malone (North Carolina) and Taylor Jenkins (Milwaukee) quickly landed new jobs."
It's been a month since Billy Donovan stepped down as head coach of the Chicago Bulls after six seasons. In 2007, Donovan was coming off leading Florida to back-to-back NCAA championships. He then signed a five-year, $27.5 million contract with the Magic. However, he changed his mind after an introductory press conference and decided to stay at the University.
He would go on to coach the Gators until 2015. Afterward, Donovan coached the Oklahoma City Thunder from 2015 to 2020.
