The Orlando Magic handed the Charlotte Hornets their worst loss of the season as they won 121-90 to set up a first-round series with the Detroit Pistons. Charlotte was embarrassed across the board and had effectively lost the game in two quarters, returning with a 31-point deficit in what was a total offensive collapse.
However, the embarrassment does not seem to have ended post-game, as the Magic’s official X account posted a hilarious clip with the franchise’s theme song playing in the background. The clip featured LaMelo Ball being hit by a ball chucked towards the court by a fan, alongside a dancing penguin, with the lyrics ‘Orlando Magic’ being repeatedly played over the video.
Charlotte’s offensive struggles saw them open on the worse side of 27-10 as Ball scored just two of his 23 points in the first half and 21 in the third quarter. However, the Hornets never looked mounting any sort of a comeback and was matched possession to possession in the second half as well.
They went 33.7% from the field, converting just 28 of their 83 shots compared to the 42/84 Magic posted. Paolo Banchero led all scorers with 25 points, six assists and five rebounds whilst also producing two steals and a block.
All of the other four Orlando starters also scored in double digits, led by Franz Wagner, who had 18 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Wendall Carter Jr. scored 16 while Desmond Bane and Jalen Suggs added 13 and 12, respectively.
The 31-point first-half lead was the largest in play-in history, although the Magic converted just eight of their 27 three-pointers, compared to the 12-45 Charlotte had. Kon Knueppel continued his postseason collapse, going 1-12 overall from the three and 1-6 from this game.
Knueppel finished with 11 points while Miles Bridges (15 points) and Brandon Miller (14 points) were the only other scorers from Charlotte to finish in double digits.
