The Philadelphia Eagles reeled in Makai Lemon with the vision of returning to the Super Bowl. The USC football star even chose a revered Eagles number to spark championship theories . But the NFL Draft pick needed the blessing of Nick Foles to wear No. 9.
Foles indeed granted the No. 20 overall selection permission to wear the number. Lemon went public with his thanks to the beloved past Eagles star, sharing a message via Zach Berman of The Athletic Thursday.
"I appreciate the Eagles so much and Nick Foles , especially, to pass that number down because I know he could have easily kept that number to himself," Lemon shared via Berman on X, formerly known as Twitter. "Such a great player when he was here wearing that No. 9, led them to the Super Bowl. I appreciate him so much. I definitely cherish that so much."
Lemon fired off this message now that he's laying claim to Foles' number.
"I'll represent the nine well wearing it, representing the team well. I'm just super excited to get that number, for sure," Lemon said.
The Trojans standout arrives with high expectations. Lemon rises as the potential replacement for All-Pro AJ Brown , who's fielding trade rumors. Also, Philly's last first round receiver selection was DeVonta Smith…who's delivered three 1,000-yard campaigns and one Super Bowl victory.
The Eagles even swooped up Lemon in front of the Pittsburgh Steelers , who reportedly wanted the wideout. But Philly moved quick to grab him, showing its desire to address Brown's situation while boosting the offense. And now Lemon will aim to become the second No. 9 in Philly to win a title since Foles in 2017.
