The New Jersey Devils signed Barrett Hayton to an offer sheet last week, attempting to pry him away from the Utah Mammoth . However, Utah had the right of first refusal. They could match the offer and keep Hayton on the one-year contract he signed with New Jersey . Or they could let him walk for a second-round pick. The Mammoth elected to match the offer on Wednesday .
Offer sheets in the NHL have been somewhat taboo over the last few decades. But they are starting to become a standard part of the NHL offseason. Mammoth general manager Bill Armstrong mentioned on Wednesday that he has no issue with what the Devils did.
"It's just business. Players want to get paid, they want to make as much money as they can in their lifetime, we get it. There's no hard feelings between us and New Jersey. We called them and said we're going to match. There's no hard feelings between the club and Barrett Hayton," the Mammoth general manager said, via The Hockey Writers reporter Chase Beardsley.

Hayton will enter his eighth NHL season, and his third with Utah. He was initially drafted fifth overall by the now-defunct Arizona Coyotes in the 2018 NHL Draft. The veteran forward played with the Coyotes until their sale and relocation to Utah.
Despite the one-year contract, Hayton does have some stability. The Mammoth are not allowed to trade Hayton for one calendar year. This means that he will be with Utah through the 2025-26 campaign. And then he will become an unrestricted free agent next summer unless he re-signs with Utah before July 1, 2027.
