The Utah Mammoth have already made multiple moves this offseason. The Mammoth traded away JJ Peterka , while also bringing in Joshua Roy and Sebastian Cossa via trades.
Now, the Mammoth have made a move on one of their pending free agent s ahead of the start of NHL Free Agency on July 1, according to hockey insider Frank Servalli.
"Pending UFA Kailer Yamamoto re-signs in Utah: 2 years x $1.75 million," Seravalli posted to X, formerly Twitter.
Yamamoto just finished a one-year deal he signed with the Mammoth in the summer of 2025. He was the 22nd overall selection of the 2017 NHL Draft by the Edmonton Oilers . Yamamoto would split time with the AHL and NHL clubs for the Oilers starting in 2017-18 through the 2022-23 season. He never lived up to the expectations, though. His best season with the Oilers was in 2021-22, when he found the back of the net 20 times, while adding 21 helpers. Still, he would regress the next season. This led to a trade of Yamamoto to the Red Wings , but he was placed on waivers with a buyout by them.
He then spent one season with the Seattle Kraken in 2023-24, amassing just 16 points. This led to the forward signing a PTO with Utah before spending much of the season with the Tucson Roadrunners of the AHL in 2024-25.
This past season, he played 59 games with the Mammoth, lighting the lamp 13 times while adding ten assists. He also added five points in the six playoff games with the team.
With the deal, the Mammoth still have six free agents to try to work on deals with. Barrett Hayton is the only restricted free agent, while Alex Kerfoor, Kevin Stenlund , Ian Cole , Nick Desimone , and Vitek Vanecek are all unrestricted free agents for the club.
Free agent frenzy gets underway this Wednesday, July 1, and ClutchPoints is your home for all the NHL Free Agency news.
