Manchester City await Nico O'Reilly injury update ahead of Liverpool clash
Manchester City have a fresh fitness concern before their trip to Liverpool after Nico O'Reilly withdrew from the England squad and returned to his club for assessment.

The left-back's departure adds uncertainty to City's preparations for the Premier League meeting at Anfield on Sunday, 11 October. It does not, at this stage, confirm that he will miss the match.
For Liverpool, the focus remains on extending an unbeaten start to the season against opponents who have caused them considerable problems in recent meetings. Any change to City's available personnel could influence the contest, but O'Reilly's situation still requires clarification.

O'Reilly returns to Manchester City for assessment
England confirmed the withdrawal in an official squad update on 1 October, with DaveOCKOP also reporting the development ahead of the Liverpool fixture.

"Nico O'Reilly has returned to Manchester City and will play no part in the forthcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures," the England statement read.
The 21-year-old completed the 3-2 defeat against Spain before missing England's subsequent 2-0 victory over Czechia in Prague.
He will now miss the remaining internationals against Croatia and Czechia. England have not called up a replacement following his departure.
Crucially, the update did not provide a diagnosis or a recovery timetable. City's assessment will determine the next steps, leaving his availability for Anfield unresolved.

Liverpool clash awaits after international break
Liverpool host City at 16:30 BST on 11 October, with both clubs looking to resume domestic football on the back of victories.
City's final match before the break was a 5-3 win over Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium. Liverpool's success was narrower, with Alexander Isak scoring the only goal against Bournemouth.
That result extended Liverpool's unbeaten opening to seven matches across all competitions, giving Andoni Iraola's side a positive foundation before the pause.
The next fixture offers a demanding examination of that progress. Liverpool will need to recover their rhythm quickly after their players return from international duty, while City face the same challenge alongside the uncertainty surrounding O'Reilly.

A home crowd and encouraging early results provide reasons for confidence. Neither removes the need for a disciplined performance against such dangerous opponents.
England withdrawal leaves selection questions
Lewis Hall stepped into England's left-back position against Czechia, combining with Anthony Gordon down that flank.
O'Reilly's withdrawal follows those of Cole Palmer, Declan Rice, Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo and Tino Livramento, making him the sixth player to leave Thomas Tuchel's squad because of injury during this international window.
For City, the immediate task is to establish whether his problem will affect club selection once the break ends.

Liverpool cannot yet prepare on the assumption that a particular replacement will start. Different personnel can alter how a flank functions, including the support offered in possession and the spaces available when attacks break down.
Until City provide more information, any suggestion that O'Reilly's absence gives Liverpool a definite advantage would be premature.
Recent meetings underline Liverpool's challenge
City's record against Liverpool last season supplies its own reminder of the difficulty ahead.
They won both Premier League encounters, following a 3-0 victory in Manchester with a late success at Anfield in February. Their FA Cup quarter-final meeting in April ended 4-0, with Erling Haaland scoring a hat-trick and Antoine Semenyo adding the other goal.

Those results belong to the previous campaign, but Liverpool will want a markedly different performance when the rivalry resumes.
O'Reilly's fitness is one detail worth monitoring as the match approaches. The larger task is unchanged: Liverpool must turn their encouraging start into a performance capable of withstanding City's attacking threat.
For now, the confirmed news concerns England duty. Whether it becomes a Manchester City selection problem at Anfield remains to be established.
