Manchester United Injury News Ahead of Chelsea Clash as Benjamin Sesko Blow Hits Hard
Manchester United head to Chelsea with the mood flat, the results worse, and the squad still in pieces. Eight games without a win tells its own story. The 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth made it uglier, and now Michael Carrick goes into another difficult fixture needing solutions that are not fully available to him.

This is the immediate problem for Manchester United. Form is bad, confidence is low, and several important players are either out, carrying something, or only just edging back into contention. Chelsea, free-scoring and full of rhythm, are not the opponents you want when your own house is a mess.
Benjamin Sesko absence leaves Manchester United short
The biggest setback is Benjamin Sesko. There is now clarity on the striker's shin issue, and it is bad news. The Slovenian is not expected back until at least January 2027, which leaves United light up front for another two months at minimum.
That matters because Sesko had already dealt with a similar problem in 2025/26, when the issue cut short his campaign. He recovered in time to feature early this season, but his involvement had already become patchy. He was around matchday squads for a while, then disappeared before the trip to Fulham. Since the international break, he has remained absent.

For a team already struggling to score and create pressure in the right areas, losing a centre-forward for that long is a proper blow. There is no point dressing it up. United need goals, presence and a focal point. Sesko cannot offer any of that from the treatment room.
Potential return date: January 2027.
Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford fitness latest
There may, finally, be one piece of better news. Bruno Fernandes is expected to return for the trip to Stamford Bridge after being left out of the side that lost to Bournemouth. The context matters. His omission came after a very public falling out with Carrick following the heavy defeat to Como, and the optics were poor. Manager and captain have since held talks, which suggests the issue has been managed, at least for now.

Carrick described leaving Fernandes out as a "pure football" decision. Fine. That may be true. It also appears to have given the midfielder an accidental breather, which might not have hurt. Fernandes was at Carrington on the squad's day off for treatment, alongside other injured players, and that points to an ongoing knock.
Still, he has played through injury before and the expectation is that he will be available. United need him, because without him they lack control, volume and edge in the final third.
Potential return date: Saturday, October 31 vs Chelsea.

Marcus Rashford is less clear. He has been carrying a hip issue and that now looks serious enough to have forced Carrick to keep him out. He was an unused substitute against Leeds in the 1-1 draw after the international break, then missed the Como trip and the Bournemouth defeat entirely.

Carrick said: "Marcus is still feeling a hip issue that we're trying to overcome." That is precise enough to confirm the problem, but vague enough to tell you very little about when he will be back. Right now, there is no confirmed return date.
Potential return date: unknown.
Kobbie Mainoo and Luke Shaw offer mixed picture
Kobbie Mainoo is the one case where there is at least a usable timeline. He has been out since the draw with Tottenham, but Carrick said before the Como game that the midfielder would be back in "10 days or so". On that basis, Mainoo should be in contention for Chelsea.

If he makes it, it will be significant. United badly need legs, calmness and some ability to receive and progress the ball through midfield. Mainoo offers all three. In a side that has looked stretched and disjointed, his return would give Carrick one fewer excuse.
Potential return date: Saturday, October 31 vs Chelsea.
Luke Shaw is murkier. The injury has only been described as a knock, which usually means either the problem is minor but awkward, or nobody wants to be too specific. What is obvious is the effect his absence has had on the back line. Carrick has been moving defenders around, using right-backs on the left and centre-backs on the right, and the result has looked exactly as unstable as you would expect.
Shaw is expected to be out longer than Mainoo, according to Carrick, but there is no firm date attached.

Potential return date: unknown.
Patrick Dorgu and Manuel Ugarte remain sidelined
Patrick Dorgu is dealing with a hamstring issue picked up on international duty with Denmark. The last update from Carrick was blunt enough: "It looks like he'll be out for a number of weeks." November has long looked like the earliest realistic target.
Potential return date: November.
Then there is Manuel Ugarte, whose absence is the longest-term problem on the list. He suffered a serious knee issue in Uruguay's 1-0 defeat to Spain at the World Cup and was stretchered off. He is not expected back until 2027, with spring or summer the broad target.

Potential return date: spring or summer 2027.
So that is where Manchester United stand before Chelsea. Fernandes and Mainoo could return, Rashford remains uncertain, Shaw is still missing, Dorgu is not ready, Ugarte is out long term, and Sesko will not be seen again until January at the earliest. It is a grim injury picture for a team already playing grim football. Stamford Bridge is next, and there is very little in the current state of things to suggest that trip gets any easier.
