Review: Everton 2-2 Man Utd... GUTTING!
Manchester United's third game of the Premier League season came as a tough test away against David Moyes' Everton at the Hill Dickenson Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Michael Carrick chose to select the same starting XI that defeated Ipswich Town 5-2 last weekend at Old Trafford, and some early opening combinations saw Bruno Fernandes rattle the bar just a few minutes into the tie.
United created more chances as the game went on, but failed to find the net, with Everton having a few chances themselves.
Just 53 seconds into the second half, Bryan Mbeumo got United on the score sheet with a lovely run and finish, changing the dynamic of the game. United looked to create more, and with Everton having little to lose, they let their shackles loose, too.
With fewer than 10 minutes remaining on the clock, Everton's Tyrique George hit a thunderous strike past Senne Lammens to level the score, although a brilliant cross from Luke Shaw found Benjamin Šeško with just minutes to go to restore United's lead.
However, right at the dearth, Ainsley Maitland-Niles was able to rescue a point for the home side with an absolute screamer, with the tie ending 2-2.
Senne Lammens – 6/10
Made several great saves throughout the game, and couldn't do much for either of Everton's strikes.
Diogo Dalot – 5/10
A couple of sloppy moments in the opening minutes, but they grew into the game and looked to attack often. Had a lot to do with Grealish in the second half and came off after getting a yellow card.
Harry Maguire – 6/10
Took an early blow to the head but didn't seem to affect him, stayed strong.
Lisandro Martínez – 7/10
Won his physical battles well and looked composed on the ball, doing very well when called upon.
Luke Shaw – 7/10
A lot more solid against Johnson when compared to last week's poor performance, and supported Rashford really well on the left. His cross for Šeško's goal was pure quality.
Kobbie Mainoo – 6/10
Was a little off it on the ball, but defensively solid. Good to see him adding that to his game.
Youri Tielemans – 7/10
He looked much sharper compared to his previous two appearances, made some good passes, and kept up with the pace very well, with Everton finding it hard to get the ball off him. Best game in Red so far.
Bryan Mbeumo – 8/10
Very involved from the opening moments, good defensively and bright in attack. Really brilliant goal early in the second half.
Bruno Fernandes – 5/10
Looked slightly behind the pace at moments and searched for the ball a lot, not had enough magic about him yet.
Marcus Rashford – 8.5/10
United's most exciting and potent player. Several great crosses and brilliant one-on-one moments on the left flank. Replaced by Dorgu in the 70th minute.
Matheus Cunha – 5/10
Dropped deep a lot and interchanged with Mbeumo and Fernandes up front, hit one shot off target, and could be more involved.
Benjamin Šeško – /10
Fantastic header to score late on for United. Hopefully gets a start in midweek to get further minutes back in his legs.
