Manchester United star looks certain to leave after latest incident
Lisandro Martinez red card leaves Manchester United staring at more hard truths
Manchester United have spent too much time this season making life difficult for themselves, and at Stamford Bridge they did it again. The key moment was simple, ugly and avoidable. Lisandro Martinez, already on a booking, swung an arm at Wesley Fofana inside the box, VAR intervened, the second yellow came, and Cole Palmer converted the penalty that effectively ended the contest.

That is the part nobody at Old Trafford can dress up. It was reckless, it was unnecessary and it damaged a side already operating with paper-thin margins. Credit to the Daily Mail for highlighting the obvious, this was not one of those debatable incidents where interpretation takes over. It was self-inflicted damage by one of United's senior players at the worst possible time.
There is a line in the original report that sums up the frustration around Martinez, "To borrow a phrase from Lisandro Martinez, we expect more from him." That is exactly it. He is 28, a World Cup winner, an experienced international and someone who should understand game state, pressure and responsibility. Instead, United got impulse over judgement.
Lisandro Martinez errors point to an unhappy ending
The wider issue is that this red card did not arrive in isolation. It fits a pattern. Martinez has had moments this season where he has been too close to the damage, whether through poor decisions, lapses in concentration or public irritation spilling into the open. The report points to his criticism of Jason Wilcox, his own-goal at Fulham and his part in Tottenham's late equaliser. None of it helps the case for a renewal when his contract is running down.

Supporters have admired his edge for a reason. Manchester United have lacked conviction and personality for years, and Martinez has usually brought both. He plays with aggression, he competes and he has often looked more emotionally invested than others around him. That can buy goodwill. It cannot excuse foolishness.
Peter Schmeichel did not bother softening the point, saying, "I put this solely on Lisandro Martinez's shoulders," and adding, "This is an absolute disgrace how he played this game. The penalty, I have no words for how crazy that was. Then he walks off the pitch shaking his head like he's done nothing wrong. So bad." Harsh, yes, but hard to argue with after a mistake of that scale.
Joe Cole's conclusion was equally direct, "Whatever the next Man United phase is, I think Martinez's time at the club has run its course," before adding, "In a Man United shirt, he's just at the scene of the crime too often." That feels close to where the club may already be. When a contract is nearing its end and performances are giving executives reasons to hesitate, the outcome tends to write itself.

Michael Carrick paying for fine margins
The result also sharpened the focus on Michael Carrick. Last season, these were the sort of tight games United somehow found a way to win. This time, they missed good first-half chances, lost control in key moments and paid the full price. Elite football often turns on details, and right now United keep getting the details wrong.
The report makes the fair point that confidence has drained away. You can see it. The missed openings, the poor decisions, the anxious body language, the feeling that one setback becomes two or three in quick succession. Managers survive spells like this only when senior players stabilise the team. Carrick did not get that from Martinez, and he did not get enough from others either.
That is what makes the defeat so damaging. It was not a collapse brought on by overwhelming inferiority. United were competitive for periods and had enough moments to make Chelsea uncomfortable. Then the familiar flaws returned and the game slipped away.

Bruno Fernandes future adds to Old Trafford uncertainty
Bruno Fernandes was another major talking point. Restored to the side and used in a more central attacking role, he had the platform to influence the match. In his best years, this is the sort of game where he imposes himself with a goal, a killer pass or at least a decisive spell of authority. Instead, the final product was not there.
One first-half chance, created by Bryan Mbeumo, summed up the problem. Fernandes got into the right area and blazed over. Beyond that, there were misplaced passes and visible frustration. He was involved, but not decisive, and for a player who has carried this side for long stretches of his seven-year spell, that matters.
The original report suggests United were open to a sale last year and may not commit heavily when his deal expires in June. That sounds entirely plausible. Fernandes has been one of the few players to produce elite numbers through chaos, but football moves quickly. Contracts, age profile and squad rebuilds have a way of forcing brutal calls.

There is a sober conclusion to draw here. Manchester United are not simply dealing with one bad result or one bad red card. They are staring at the possible end of two significant relationships, Martinez and Fernandes, while their manager struggles to stop the slide. That is how squads drift into a reset, not by dramatic declaration but by accumulation of evidence.
Our View
This is the kind of report that lands badly because it rings true. The Martinez incident was indefensible. Fire and aggression are useful when they are controlled. When they boil over like that, they become vanity. United needed leadership and got theatre. It is impossible to talk about standards and accountability, then shrug when a senior defender throws a game away with that sort of stupidity.
There is also a bigger fear here. Too many players at this club seem to hit the same wall. The intensity drops, the focus wanders, and then every discussion becomes about contracts, exits and what comes next. That is not how serious teams operate. Serious teams make hard decisions early and move forward. United keep lingering in the grey area.

Fernandes worries me for a different reason. He still cares, perhaps more than most, but there are signs of wear. The gestures, the rushed passes, the missed chance, it all looked like a player trying to drag a side forward and finding there is less left in the tank than before. If the club are thinking about another reset, they have to decide whether he is still central to it or whether this is the point to cash out whatever remains.
Above all, the most depressing part is how predictable it feels. One mistake, one loss of control, one familiar post-match conversation. That has become Manchester United's identity, and until that changes, every crisis will feel deserved.
