TAMPA, Fla. — Eric Mahaffey showed he belonged in the NCAA Tournament, albeit in the Akron Zips men's basketball team's 91-71 loss to Texas Tech on Friday, March 20.

Akron's bright spots in its first-round Midwest Region letdown at Benchmark International Arena were forward Amani Lyles (26 points), guard Shammah Scott (20 points) and the Mahaffey brothers , wing Evan (eight points) and guard Eric (eight points).

Lyles, Scott, Evan Mahaffey and Zips point guard Tavari Johnson are seniors who have played their final college basketball games.

Guard Bowen Hardman is a senior, too, but he told the Beacon Journal he's hoping the NCAA grants him another season of eligibility. Hardman explained he has submitted an appeal to the NCAA because just 19 minutes of playing time as an Ohio State freshman is being counted as one of his seasons of eligibility.

Which Akron Zips players have eligibility left after 2025-26 season?

The Zips will need to reload this offseason, but March Madness reaffirmed they have a building block in redshirt freshman Eric Mahaffey, if UA can keep him from leaving through the pesky NCAA transfer portal. The younger Mahaffey brother went 2-of-3 shooting from the field (0 of 1 on 3-pointers) and tallied four rebounds, a steal and a blocked shot in 18 minutes off the bench.

Sophomore guard Sharron Young didn't fare as well when No. 12-seed Akron met No. 5 Texas Tech — his shot wasn't falling — though he ought to be prioritized as another key component of UA's future foundation. Young scored four points on 1-of-6 shooting from the field (0 of 3 on 3s), recorded an assist and drew two charging fouls in 19 minutes off the bench.

Will Akron Zips guard Eric Mahaffey test the NCAA transfer portal?

In addition to Eric Mahaffey and Sharron Young, Halligan and Musiime-Kamali are the young guys who became regulars in Akron coach John Groce's rotation. Halligan started 23 of his 34 games but played fewer minutes than three of his teammates who came off the bench.

The bottom line is Eric Mahaffey is Akron's most proven commodity who definitely has eligibility remaining. What are his intentions for next season?

"I don't really know yet," Eric Mahaffey told the Beacon Journal. "[Akron] is great. It's like my first home, so I would love to stay here."

College basketball: Akron Zips threaten Texas Tech in NCAA Tournament before falling apart

The stance is reasonable. Eric Mahaffey would like to remain with the Zips, yet the possibility of receiving a life-changing amount of name, image and likeness money should cause anyone to stop short of fully committing to a return.

And there is no doubt Eric Mahaffey opened some eyes with his March Madness debut (he was out with a knee injury last season when the Zips went dancing). The March Madness lights were not too bright for him.

Listed as 6 feet, 6 inches and 200 pounds, Eric Mahaffey produced a three-point play by tipping in a missed 3-pointer by Scott and drawing a foul on Texas Tech forward LeJuan Watts. The play cut Akron's deficit to 64-60 with 9:42 left and resulted in Watts fouling out.

Unfortunately for Akron (29-6, 17-1 Mid-American Conference), Texas Tech (23-10, 12-6 Big 12) began a backbreaking 15-2 run a few minutes later.

"With [Eric Mahaffey] just being a freshman, just seeing him come into the game and make those plays like that, it makes me just really excited for him and also for what's next for him and the people here at Akron," Evan Mahaffey said. "I think when you have younger guys like him and Sharron coming in and making big plays like that, it means a lot to the program and also builds their confidence because they're on these stages and not being fazed."

Akron Zips thought Eric Mahaffey had 'clean' block against Texas Tech's Christian Anderson

The officiating crew whistled Eric Mahaffey for a foul on a fast-break alley-oop attempt by Texas Tech guard Christian Anderson with 6:07 left. Eric Mahaffey told the Beacon Journal he thought he "got all ball" during the play, yet Anderson made two foul shots to give Texas Tech a 73-64 lead early in its 15-2 run.

"That block looked really clean to me," Evan Mahaffey said.

There are plenty of reasons for Eric Mahaffey's older brother and the Zips to be proud of him.

"At the end when we were walking off [the court], I tried to just soak up every moment I could and just seeing him in the same jersey as me one more time," Evan Mahaffey said. "Moments like that, you'll never forget."

Evan Mahaffey's days in an Akron jersey have ended. UA fans should hope Eric Mahaffey dons a Zips uniform again.
