Marcus Spears the former NFL defensive end and current ESPN analyst was in Seattle on Monday night to work on the network's Monday Night Countdown panel ahead of the game between the Seahawks and Chicago Bears.
But Marcus Spears the father was in another headspace entirely, as his son, Marcus Spears Jr. was about to play in his first official game as a forward for the Texas Longhorns.
As a surprise to Spears, the Countdown desk cut to a shot of Spears Jr. making his walk through the arena ahead of Texas' opener. At the desk, Spears was clearly not ready for the moment.
"I'm about to cry, bro. That's crazy," Spears said. "He done worked his ass off to get here, man. Damn that's amazing. Y'all got me with that one man. This is his second game ever in an arena."
Spears then shared that he had initially planned on missing the night's broadcast to watch his son's debut, but instead was able to watch him play in an exhibition last week, and decided to let his son have the moment for himself, at least for now.
"I've got to bring America in on the background," Spears said. "I called our producers, and I was like, I don't think I'm going come to Seattle this week, because I wanted to be there for his first game. But they had an exhibition last week against St. John's, and I was able to be there for him and see him play.
"Then I got here yesterday, and I'm telling you I was down as hell that I wasn't going to be in the building. And then I thought about it, and I was like, my wife and myself have prepared him to be where he's at. So he'll be fine. I'm glad to be here with y'all, my brothers, but you know where my mind and my heart at, and I can't wait to watch him play tonight."
Whenever Spears did get to tune in to watch his son in action, he caught one impressive performance. Spears Jr. played 20 minutes off the bench, scoring 11 points, securing five rebounds, and delivering a team-high four blocks.
