In an unfortunate event that feels like the microcosm of the Seattle Mariners ' 2026 season thus far, Julio Rodriguez had to exit their Thursday contest against the Los Angeles Angels after getting hit in the head with a baseball while running towards second base. Angels first baseman Nolan Schanuel attempted to throw him out at the keystone, but his throw ended up hitting the Mariners star squarely on the back of his helmet.
While Rodriguez ended up being safe at third base, he paid a heavy price, as it was clear that the throw rocked him flush. He received medical attention from trainer Kyle Torgerson and ended up staying in the game, but he needed to exit shortly after, with the Mariners removing him in favor of Victor Robles .
Now, the 25-year-old center fielder has been placed in concussion protocol , with the Mariners working to see whether or not this injury would warrant an absence or two, as per Daniel Kramer of MLB.com.
Just to make matters worse for the Mariners, their backup center fielder in Robles had to exit the game as well after getting hit by a pitch. Robles exited in the fifth inning and was replaced by Wester Wilson, who moved to right field which then forced Luke Raley to move to center.
Per Kramer, Robles is "still in quite a bit of pain" after getting struck by a pitch. Nonetheless, the good news for the Mariners is that X-rays for Robles came back negative.
2026 has certainly been a challenging season for the Mariners , and their everyday players picking up knocks like these aren't going to help. They currently are tied for the AL West lead with the Texas Rangers with a 45-43 record.
On the season, Rodriguez has 14 home runs and 40 runs batted in on an OPS of .747.
