When All-Star outfielder Kyle Stowers went down with an injury during spring training for the Miami Marlins , the NL East club knew they had to make an addition to the roster.
They needed someone with plenty of Major League experience and who could potentially produce on offense.
After being granted his release by the Detroit Tigers , the Marlins signed outfielder Austin Slater to a one-year, $1 million contract.
Slater did not last long with the Fish, playing just 12 games before being designated for assignment, reports Craig Mish of SportsGrid . The 33-year-old had no extra-base hits and nine strikeouts in 28 trips to the plate.

The Marlins have five days to trade or put Slater, who made his MLB debut in 2017 with the San Francisco Giants and has hit 45 career home runs, on waivers.
The New York Yankees acquired the veteran from the Chicago White Sox at last year's trade deadline, but he only made it into 14 games due to a left hamstring strain.
Outfielder Esteury Ruiz will replace Slater on the Marlins' roster.
