The Miami Marlins are suddenly a contender. At 52-42, the Marlins are only three games behind the Atlanta Braves for first place in the National League East. They currently hold the final NL Wild Card spot as well. The Marlins' recent success has led many to wonder if Sandy Alcantara is still a trade candidate. According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the answer is no .
"Barring an utter collapse, the hottest team in baseball not only intends to keep staff ace Sandy Alcantara , but also add strategically to its roster, according to people briefed on the club's plans who were granted anonymity to speak freely," Rosenthal wrote in a recent article.
An "utter collapse" may change the situation, but it seems as if Alcantara is going to remain with Miami past the upcoming MLB trade deadline . Alcantara has previously been mentioned in trade rumors, but the Marlins will need him on the roster if they want to make a legitimate postseason run.

The 30-year-old has not had his best season. A former Cy Young winner, Alcantara holds an underwhelming 4.00 ERA as of this story's writing. Still, he is taking the mound every fifth day and giving his team opportunities to win. Wins and losses do not mean what they once did for pitchers, but the Marlins ace is 10-4 overall. Additionally, Alcantara leads the league in starts (19), complete games (one), innings pitched (123.2) and batters faced (517).
Alcantara may not be shutting down the competition, but he is giving the Marlins plenty of innings while helping the ball club overall. And now, it seems as if Alcantara is set to play a role for the Marlins as Miami looks to reach the postseason.
