As the Penn State Nittany Lions prepare for their game against Temple , they also received an update on the recovery timeline of a very popular legacy player. While some are heavily anticipating the returns of players such as Gabe Burkle and Alex Tatsch , potentially as soon as this week, they may have to wait longer to see the son of one of the best players in Penn State history.
For LaVar Arrington II , having a setback such as his knee injury will be hugely frustrating. Not only because of the opportunity lost, but mostly because of the circumstances he could be entering. Remember, Arrington II had made a positional change in the offseason, from linebacker to the more competitive defensive end room. After that group's performance against the Thundering Herd last Saturday, chances are when Arrington returns, he won't see the field much.
Also, differing reports tell a different tale about the potential severity of his injury. While his father said that the injury was a "setback and had to get his knee cleaned up", Matt Campbell put Arrington's recovery further into perspective, saying that he could be facing up to four to six weeks on the sideline. That would mean that he would return for Penn State's toughest stretch, against both USC and Michigan .
One would imagine by that time that a steady rotation would have been determined by Matt Campbell for his edge rushing group. Most interestingly as well is that Arrington was not the only player converted to edge. Caleb Bacon , the Iowa State transfer, did as well, and had the best game of any Penn State defensive player last week. Add in the fact that those may be the two toughest remaining games on Penn State's schedule, and Matt Campbell may not want to risk playing Arrington in those situations so soon after recovery, especially at a new position.
While fans may want to see LaVar Arrington II in action, they may have to be more patient than they might have expected.
