Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford got a new teammate on offense, though it wasn't at a position anyone expected; rather, it was a player who plays the same position as he does.
The Rams took Alabama QB Ty Simpson with the No. 13 overall selection, marking the first quarterback to be taken in the first round since Jared Goff .
Simpson, a redshirt junior out of Alabama, did not have the highest pedigree, was projected to go late in the first round, though there was a considerable gap between him and Fernando Mendoza.
Despite the consensus, the Rams took him in the middle of the first round, higher than expected, to be the successor to Stafford, who has battled back problems, among other injuries.

With the Rams in win-now mode, naturally, all of the focus is on making the most out of Stafford's time, and it is also his own inclination.
Mentoring and developing Simpson, therefore, sits low on the list of priorities.
"I think my job, first and foremost, is to get myself and our team ready to play as best I possibly can," Stafford said.
"He's a part of that team, there's no question about it. We're in a unique position in the fact that we play the same position. I have a ton of experience, and he's just now starting his journey as an NFL player. So, listen, I know he's gonna watch, not only me, but other guys, you know?"
What will Matthew Stafford do to help Simpson?
While not going out of his way for Simpson, Stafford has expressed a willingness to be an open book for the young player.
"He's a guy that asks questions; I've been trying to answer those as honestly and as thoroughly as I possibly can," Stafford said.
"He's a smart kid. He's got talent, obviously. He's a high draft pick. So, happy to add good players to our team. He's one of them. But my job is, you know, go out there and get myself and our team as ready to play as I possibly can."

Even if Stafford is not the most available for the rookie, Simpson's success will come down to his relationship with head coach Sean McVay, the offensive guru who can put him in a spot to succeed.
