After 16 NBA seasons, Garrett Temple is moving directly from the court to the sidelines. The 40-year-old veteran is retiring as a player and joining new Dallas Mavericks head coach Dusty May's coaching staff, according to NBA insider Marc Stein, with Temple's agent, Dan Eveloff, confirming the transition .
Temple arrives in Dallas after spending the past three seasons with the Toronto Raptors , where he became one of the franchise's most respected veteran leaders. Although he appeared in only 22 games during the 2025-26 season and logged just 73 minutes, his influence went beyond the box score. He earned praise for his leadership, teaching ability and mentorship of the team's young roster.
The Mavericks' revamped coaching staff will also include former New Orleans Pelicans head coach Willie Green. Temple is already familiar with Green, having played two seasons under him in New Orleans before beginning his coaching career.
An undrafted guard out of LSU in 2009, Temple built one of the league's longest-lasting careers despite entering the NBA without hearing his name called on draft night. He spent parts of his rookie season with the Houston Rockets , Sacramento Kings and San Antonio Spurs , later played a season in Italy, and returned to establish himself with the Washington Wizards , where he spent four years from 2012-16, his longest stint with a single franchise.
Across 16 NBA seasons, Temple suited up for 12 teams and appeared in 793 regular-season games, including 289 starts. He averaged 5.8 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.6 assists while shooting 39.9% from the field, 34.2% from three-point range and 74.4% at the free-throw line in 19.6 minutes per game.
Away from the court, Temple also served as a vice president of the National Basketball Players' Association beginning in 2017.
