Despite the countless challenges Tyrese Maxey has faced since arriving in the NBA, he has always seemed to overcome them. This season, he faces his toughest obstacle yet.
This season is clearly different for Philadelphia. For the first time in his career, Maxey has consistent help on the court on both sides of the floor. The roster is stacked this season, so the 76es don't exactly need Maxey to carry the offensive load anymore.
Now, Maxey's most valuable contribution to the team is his ability to connect his All-NBA caliber teammates together and turn them into a well-oiled machine.
If there's one thing Maxey does well, it's adapt.
Maxey's track record of winning speaks for itself, but what specifically makes him so well equipped for this upcoming season is the fact that he's played so many different roles in every season of his NBA career.
Upon his arrival, the Sixers paired him with Ben Simmons , an unorthodox experiment that only lasted 47 games. When Simmons stopped reporting to the Sixers and the experiment was officially over, Maxey had to quickly learn how to run an NBA-level offense.
Not too long after, James Harden landed in Philadelphia, forcing Maxey to pause in his development of creating for others with the ball. His new role was the opposite: learning to play without the ball. Just like Simmons, however, Harden left not too long after his arrival, and Maxey had to become the primary creator.
In Joel Embiid 's absence with injury, Maxey had to elevate his performance and not only create for others, but become a complete offensive engine and carry the team into competitive basketball. Maxey proved he could thrive through adversity. This past season, he averaged 28.3 points per game, made an All-NBA Third Team, and ultimately put the league on notice.
For the 2026-2027 campaign, he proved he belongs alongside the league's best guards. He's proven time and time again that he can be what the roster calls for, but just as things had started to settle in his peak role, Philadelphia needs something different this year.
The Sixers coaching staff has walked into one of the best issues an NBA team can have in the modern era: the fact that they have too many offensive engines.
In the starting five, four of the players have shown in their careers that they can carry an offense by simply demanding the ball and taking control of the game.
LeBron James commands gravity by simply being on the court. Embiid requires two defenders from the free throw line to the low post. Jaylen Brown is a legitimate unstoppable force in any downhill or isolation setting.
However, assembling a team of primary creators and expecting things to work smoothly has rarely worked. Take the 2017-18 Oklahoma City Thunder as the cautionary tale.
The team combined Russell Westbrook , Paul George , and Carmelo Anthony in the starting five. As far as points per game , Westbrook averaged 25.4, George averaged 21.9, and Anthony contributed 16.2. Although the team got things to work somewhat in the end, they struggled significantly in the beginning. In December 2017, the team ranked 24th in offensive efficiency throughout the league.
The offense relied on giving one of the three stars the ball and letting him go to work. They finished 7th in offensive efficiency, but it didn't change the ultimate outcome. They lost in the first round to a team that had more offensive flow in the Utah Jazz.
Throughout the time that those three stars were together, none of them were willing to reshape their game to complement the others. Maxey has the chance to do exactly that.
The importance of Maxey ultimately being the connector of the offense lies in his adaptability in comparison to his teammates. James, Embiid, and Brown can change all of their playstyles and adapt to the team's needs. However, Maxey's presence offers an alternative for each of these guys to continue being the most efficient versions of themselves without having to let up.
The Sixers can ultimately maximize the potential of the team by embracing his versatility. He no longer has to be the end or beginning of a possession, and instead be what links it all together.
Every stop in Maxey's career has primed him to thrive. He's learned so much throughout his time in the league and the different rosters he's played with. If he becomes the string that ties everyone together, this team can be championship bound.
Maxey has shown time and again that he is more than willing to do whatever the team needs. Simply put, he just wants to win.
