Rams head coach Sean McVay plans to joke with Aaron Donald after the star defender fumbled a loose ball out of bounds during Sunday's game. The play happened in the third quarter of the 24-9 win over the Chargers at SoFi Stadium. McVay told reporter Michael J. Duarte that he will "give him such a hard time about that" when they next meet, according to the New York Post . Donald has never scored a touchdown in his career, and this missed chance kept that streak alive. The veteran defensive tackle tripped while trying to scoop up the ball near the 20-yard line.
The error cost the Rams six points but did not change the final result. Los Angeles held the Chargers to 281 total yards and forced three turnovers. Donald finished with two tackles and one tackle for loss. His teammates found the moment funny, with some pretending to give him CPR on the sideline. The coach admitted Donald looked embarrassed, noting he "couldn't even look at me and make eye contact after that." The team improved to 4-4 with this second straight victory.

The Play That Went Wrong
With 1:52 left in the third quarter, Rams linebacker Wesley Bailey strip-sacked Justin Herbert. The quarterback fumbled the ball at the 26-yard line. The loose football bounced right toward Donald, who saw the end zone clear. He thought he would score the first touchdown of his long career. McVay explained the moment to Duarte, saying, "I saw what he was thinking because it was going right in front of you and he's thinking, 'I'm going to scoop and score." The coach watched the future Hall of Famer try to grab the ball but fail.
Donald stumbled and fell onto the football before knocking it out of bounds. The Chargers kept possession after a nine-yard loss. Television cameras showed Donald lying on the grass with a smile, knowing he messed up big time. He was close to making history but instead made a blooper. The broadcast crew captured his stunned face while his teammates laughed at the sideline. Even injured star Myles Garrett watched from an exercise bike and could not stop smiling.
Teammates Have Their Say
The locker room turned the mistake into a joke rather than a crisis. Linebacker Byron Young did not hold back when talking about the play. He told Duarte, according to the New York Post , "I love AD, but he's getting a little old you know." Young made the comment as a playful shot at the future Hall of Famer. He quickly added, "I'm joking, I'm joking. He's always around the ball."

McVay also shared his thoughts on the mood. He said, "But at least we can laugh about it right now." The coach noted that Donald was so close to a big moment that the failure stung. He described the defensive tackle's reaction by saying, "His face, he couldn't even look at me and make eye contact after that." The coach added the final blow to the story, noting, "And then he knocks that s—t out of bounds. I mean, what the hell."
Despite the funny moment, the Rams defense performed at a high level. They held the Chargers offense to just 281 yards for the game. Justin Herbert committed three turnovers, two of which were interceptions by Quentin Lake and Trent McDuffie. McDuffie made his return from a groin injury for this key win. Donald himself recorded two tackles and one loss for a team that needs every stop. The defensive unit has now won two games in a row after a slow start.
The team now sits at 4-4 on the season. They need to keep this defensive energy to climb the standings. Donald missed a touchdown, but the team won and stays in the race. The coach will use this story to keep the locker room loose.
Donald's Career Context
Aaron Donald has terrorized quarterbacks for years without ever scoring a touchdown. This missed chance means he will likely finish his career without one. He is a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year. His value comes from stopping plays, not finishing them. The scoop and score would have been a historic first for him. The fact that he tried shows his hunger to do anything to win.

The Rams did not need the six points to secure the victory. Their defense was a nightmare for Herbert all day. The team cruised to the win after the Chargers punted two plays later. Donald hurried off the field and did not speak to reporters in the locker room. He may have needed time to recover his dignity after the blunder. The coach and teammates will not let him forget it anytime soon.
The Rams move forward with a 4-4 record and a clear path to the playoffs.
