The Phoenix Mercury have made another notable move with 14 games remaining, re-signing rookie forward Marta Suarez to a rest-of-season contract.
She has averaged 4.0 points on 50.0% shooting and 1.4 rebounds in 9.5 minutes of play. During those games, she's brought an infectious energy and a forward presence the team has needed.
The Mercury previously signed Suarez to a developmental spot before obtaining three seven-day contracts. In correspondence, this move felt like it was a possibility.

The 11-19 Phoenix squad needs all the help they can get, even if she and other rotational players have seen their minutes dwindle. That jovial spirit has been something veterans like Alyssa Thomas and Kahleah Copper have spoken highly of.
But her on-court impact might be just as valuable. Although there are some rookie mistakes like getting into early foul trouble, there's an unmatched intensity and determination when she's on the floor.
And to Thomas's pleasure, Suarez can talk trash when the situation presents itself.
Nonetheless, she's been around the organization since the end of the preseason so there's familiarity to have. And with the Mercury trading for Kelsey Plum that sent Monique Akoa Makani to the Los Angeles Sparks , the crop of young players isn't as plentiful.
Keeping Suarez establishes at least some future for the forward position in the next handful of years. Still, she will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season but could receive a reserved qualifying offer.
No matter what, it looks to be a step in the right direction for keeping and building a player up who aligns with what the franchise is looking for.
