The Cowboys may have finally found some answers on offense, but their defensive questions are becoming harder to ignore. After spending the offseason reshaping the unit, Dallas entered 2026 expecting the changes to produce a more reliable defense. Four games in, that expectation is facing another serious test.
Former Cowboys defensive tackle and NFL Network analyst Gerald McCoy believes the problem is not necessarily the talent Dallas added. Speaking on the Dan Patrick Show, he argued that the Cowboys' front office put the necessary pieces in place but failed when it came to turning those pieces into a functioning defense.

"The execution is what was bad. What they done, and I won't blame Jerry and Stephen for the people they brought in because they brought in all the right pieces. They drafted well. Kenny and Quinnen and Rashan Gary and and the guys you drafted you just traded for a cover corner, and you're doing everything necessary. The execution of getting a defensive coordinator that can put it together is where they messed up," McCoy said on the show.
McCoy's criticism was aimed at defensive coordinator Christian Parker, who is in his first season running an NFL defense. Parker was hired by the Cowboys in January after spending the previous two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles as their defensive pass game coordinator and defensive backs coach. At 34, he became the youngest defensive coordinator in Cowboys history.

There is some context behind McCoy's defense of the Cowboys' roster construction. Dallas added Rashan Gary in a trade with the Green Bay Packers, already had Kenny Clark from the Micah Parsons trade, and had acquired Quinnen Williams from the New York Jets. The Cowboys also added cornerback Cobie Durant in free agency and continued investing in the defense through the draft.

The criticism of Parker, however, comes as Dallas' defense continues to show inconsistencies. In the season opener against the New York Giants, the Cowboys allowed 394 yards, struggled to generate pressure, and had multiple communication issues.
Parker himself entered the season with a clear plan for the unit. When he was introduced in February, he said Dallas would operate with multiple defensive structures, including a 3-4 base, 4-3 spacing, and 4-2-5 nickel looks. He also identified stopping the run and affecting the quarterback as the two most important priorities for his defense.
"Christian Parker is in over his head. He put together a scheme where it has no identity and he has guys all over the place and that's why it's not working," McCoy further noted.
That makes the Cowboys' decision to hire Parker even more interesting. When Dallas brought him in, vice president of player personnel Will McClay praised the way he understood both sides of a defense and how he explained his ideas.

"When you develop Patrick Surtain and [Quinyon] Mitchell and [Cooper] DeJean, and they've all been under his kind of tutelage, it gives us good hope in knowing that he's a hell of a football coach and he'll improve that part, as well as the whole defense," McClay said.
Still, Dallas' defensive struggles cannot be attributed entirely to Parker. Injuries have significantly affected the unit, particularly in the secondary. DeMarvion Overshown and Cobie Durant are dealing with hamstring injuries, while Jalen Thompson and P.J. Locke have also landed on injured reserve. Malik Hooker only recently returned, and Joey Porter Jr. made his Cowboys debut against Houston after being acquired from Pittsburgh.
There have also been signs of progress. Rookie linebacker Jaishawn Barham impressed against Baltimore with seven tackles and two tackles for loss. The Cowboys then rallied from a double-digit deficit to beat Houston 34-30 in Week 4, although the defense still surrendered 30 points. Against Washington, Dallas generated 12 total pressures but failed to record a sack.
Dallas has added the pieces. Now Parker has to make them click. With the defense still searching for an identity, the pressure is no longer on the roster alone. It is on the man calling the shots.
