The New York Mets are in the middle of a disastrous 2026 season. It wouldn't be a surprise if they sold some players at the MLB trade deadline this year if things don't get any better.
There are a lot of things this team needs to turn this season around, and offense is arguably the biggest issue for this team. But, other than Juan Soto , the catcher position is not one the Mets have to worry about this season.
And with Will Sammon of The Athletic's report, the Mets won't have to worry about the position for a few more years. Sammon reports that the Mets are in agreement on an $11.5 million extension with Luis Torrens to lock up a veteran for the next two years.

"Catcher Luis Torrens and the New York Mets are in agreement on a two-year extension, league source tells The Athletic," Sammon reports. "He is set to make $11.5 million for 2027 and 2028."
Torrens is 30 years old and was under contract for just the 2026 MLB season. But now, he's set to sign a two-year extension to stay in New York as the backup to Francisco Alvarez.
He's getting a two-year deal worth $11.5 million over the next two seasons, which comes out to roughly $5.75 million per-year for the veteran catcher.

This season, Torrens is hitting .200 with four RBIs in 30 at-bats. His .467 OPS is far from ideal, but as a backup catcher, he doesn't have to be perfect, though ideally he'd hit a bit better than this.
Last year for the Mets, in 261 at-bats, Torrens hit .226 with a .629 OPS. Not great still, but for a backup catcher, that's not too bad.
And his presence behind the plate is a big help for the Mets, as he's a solid defender behind the plate, which makes his spot as the team's backup worthwhile.
The Mets are locking him in for the next two years on this $11.5 million deal. It's not too expensive, especially considering how much the Mets are spending on other players all across the roster.
