Huascar Brazoban will be the starting pitcher on Monday, via Mike Puma of the New York Post. Functioning as the opener, he will give the Mets one, maybe two innings before being removed for their bulk pitcher. While it hasn’t been confirmed who that will be, left-hander David Peterson is available out of the bullpen.

Brazoban has pitched to a 1.15 ERA and a 13/3 K/BB ratio over his 14 appearances in 2026. He isn’t a stranger to opening, starting three games for the Mets in 2025. To open their series against the Rockies, New York is hoping Brazoban sets the tone and puts the franchise in a position to win.

Had Peterson not been struggling , perhaps he may have earned a traditional start. But in his last outing against the Washington Nationals , the left-hander allowed five hits and seven earned runs in 3.2 innings. Peterson has a 6.53 ERA through his first seven starts. Assuming he is called from the bullpen as the bulk reliever, the Mets will hope Peterson finds his footing in his new role.

No matter who is on the mound, the Mets know how crucial this series is. It’s still early in the MLB season, but New York has gotten out to a brutal 12-22 start. They have already been swept by the Rockies. If the Mets can’t secure a series victory, there will be even more questions for the franchise.
