With the New York Mets looking to start the 2026 season on a positive note, the starting rotation experienced some concern dealing with pitcher Clay Holmes . As the Mets pitcher in Holmes left his start on Friday against the Athletics , manager Carlos Mendoza would give an update that any fan wants to hear.
While Holmes left the game on Friday in the sixth inning because of hamstring tightness, Mendoza was asked about a potential update for the 33-year-old. It would be nothing but good notes from Mendoza, saying how Holmes is "feeling better" and "he's in line to make the next start."
"Normal soreness after an outing, went through a series of tests, strength-wise, in the training room and checked all the boxes," Mendoza said, via SNY. "So as of right now, I think the next step is making sure that he throws his bullpen a couple days from now, before we make the final call, but as of right now, he's in line to make the next start."
Mets' Clay Holmes didn't seem too concerned about his hamstring injury
It did seem that there wasn't much concern from the Mets when Holmes left the game, as when the pitcher and Mendoza were asked after the game on Friday night, they would downplay the severity. Holmes even said how he's "pretty optimistic" about his outlook."
"Hopefully, we're in a good spot. It doesn't seem too major," Holmes said, via ESPN. "I'm pretty optimistic with it, and I feel like I'll be able to make my next start, but 'til we kind of wake up tomorrow and see where we're at tomorrow, we don't really know."
"He doesn't seem too concerned," Mendoza said after the 4-0 loss to the Athletics on Friday. "He's saying that he got to a weird position and he felt a little tight there. But the more testing that they're doing there, the better that he feels. So we just got to wait and see how he wakes up tomorrow and see what we got."
The next scheduled start for Holmes is on April 15 against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
