Devin Williams must have been raring to get a fresh start after struggling last season with the New York Yankees . And to begin the 2026 season with his new team, the New York Met s, Williams must have been reminded of what happened last season, especially during a rough four-game stretch towards the middle of April where he allowed eight earned runs in just two innings of work.
But since then, Williams has been a shutdown reliever for the Mets . Williams entered the Mets' Thursday night clash against the Washington Nationals in the middle of a nine-game stretch in which he hasn't allowed a single earned run all while allowing just one hit. He was able to accomplish all of that in 8.2 innings, which is nothing to scoff at.
On Thursday, Williams once again got the job done for the Mets. He shut the door for New York in a 2-1 win over the Nationals, allowing just one hit without an earned run while striking out one. His ERA is now done to 4.32 as a result.
After recording his seventh save of the season on Thursday, Williams gave an insight as to what was fueling this excellent stretch of his.
"It's basically my starting position. The way I'm starting with my hands. It's a lot more comfortable for me," Williams said, via SNY. "I did change it in the past and now I changed it back. I have a lot of reps coming from there. It was always kind of a struggle for me to come inside with my hands at my belt. [I changed it to avoid] tipping."
It's clear that whatever Williams is doing is working . Him getting into this roll off the bullpen at least crosses one problem off of the Mets' mind as they look to recover from an abhorrent start to the 2026 season.
