- Mets Face Offseason Decision on Up-and-Down Infielder

New York Mets infielder Ronny Mauricio had a great game Saturday against the Washington Nationals . He went 2-for-4, hitting two home runs, one from each side of the plate, compiling three RBI in a 7-1 victory. Mauricio has yet to really get that opportunity like Brett Baty , Mark Vientos , or Francisco Alvarez have gotten.

The most games he has played in a season was 61 in 2025. Besides that, he has played 26 games in 2023 and only 19 games this season, mostly filling in for an injured Francisco Lindor earlier in the year. He has yet to prove himself in the majors, but this performance may have shown the Mets brass that there is potential in a guy like Mauricio and that there could be room for him on the 2027 roster.
Mauricio has had a rough start to his MLB career. He hasn't gotten the opportunity to play a full season. He also had a brutal ACL tear that kept him out all of 2024. Between all three of his big league seasons, Mauricio is hitting just .224 in 106 total games played. He also tends to have issues with his patience and tends to be a free swinger most of the time. However, he has solid pop in his bat and can be a sneaky baserunner, which makes him a potential player for a roster spot next season. The main way he can earn a spot is by having an outstanding spring training.
Spring training may be Mauricio's final chance to prove he can be a piece on this Mets squad for the future. He also needs more chances, and with the potential of Bo Bichette opting out this offseason , a chance to play may come for Mauricio. Another opportunity can come in the form of aging vet Marcus Semien , who has been disappointing in his first season as a Met .
There are a few ways he can get an opportunity, but Mauricio is going to have to prove his worth to this franchise. If he can't, then he sadly may stay a minor leaguer for most of his career, or they may just have to move on from him. It might be time for Mauricio to continue his career elsewhere, especially with all the positions filled up at the moment in Queens. Unless Bichette does leave or Semien is moved to the bench, it is hard to imagine a spot for Mauricio at this time.
With the end of the season upon us, Mauricio will have plenty of time in the offseason to improve in spots where he has flaws. One main issue he needs to work on is his discipline at the plate. It is something that he will certainly need to work on during the winter and in spring training next season, if he wants a chance to be on the squad next season.
If Mauricio doesn't show any improvement when (or if) next season comes along, the Mets should perhaps look to move on from their former top prospect. The 25-year-old may need a change of scenery to really showcase his talents, especially if he isn't going to get regular chances to play. There are a lot of question marks for this team going into next year, and it remains to be seen whether or not Mauricio will have a role come March of next season.
