The New York Mets are in the midst of a serious downward spiral, losing their last eight games. Now, manager Carlos Mendoza is hoping a change to the lineup changes New York ’s fortune.
When the Mets take on the Chicago Cubs on Friday, Carson Benge will be hitting leadoff while Francisco Lindor will be batting third , via Mike Puma of the New York Post. Lindor has consistently been the team’s leadoff hitter throughout their 2026 campaign.
However, the shortstop is hitting just .184 with a home run, RBI and two stolen bases. Lindor has been known to have slow starts in the past. But his slump to start the season has been an entirely different beast. Lindor has been incapable of driving in runs all year, but perhaps moving down to the third spot will unlock his bat.
As for Benge, the top prospect has usually bats at the bottom of the lineup. His numbers haven’t been much better, as he is hitting .151 with a home run, three RBIs and five stolen bases. Clearly though Benge has proven he can be a difference maker on the base paths. Now leading off, he’ll have more of an opportunity to get on base.
When it comes to Lindor, the Mets are well aware of what he is capable of. He is coming off of an All-Star season and is signed to a $341 million contract. Ultimately though, production has to come.
How Lindor and the Mets at large react to Mendoza’s lineup switch will be determined by their performance on Friday. Regardless, New York needs to find their footing sooner rather than later.
