The Miami Dolphins' latest roster addition comes as the expense of an AFC playoff hopeful.
The Miami Dolphins
are welcoming another new face to their foundational roster churn. In what is becoming something of a weekly occurrence, Miami is exchanging offensive line depth this week - and saying goodbye to a 2026 rookie (probably just for now) in the process.
The Miami Dolphins have claimed former Seattle Seahawks offensive guard Christian Haynes. It's an intriguing add, especially given that Haynes lost his roster spot on account of Seattle bringing in someone called …*squints*
…Quenton Nelson. Hard to blame him! But the claiming of Haynes is only half the story. We usually don't find out when players lose a waiver claim…but we did today. The Dolphins sniped the Baltimore Ravens for Haynes' services.
This reminds me of that old State Farm insurance. 'Ohhhh, you've got to be quicker than that!'
The Baltimore Ravens attempt to claim Haynes off the waiver wire was faltered by the Dolphins, who currently sit third in the 2027 NFL Draft order and, by extension, have third priority for all waiver claims from other teams. The Dolphins' offensive line depth has not been tested yet this season. Backup guard Jarrett Kingston has only been needed for one cameo appearance this season against Cincinnati. That could change this week with rookie guard Kadyn Proctor in concussion protocol. But Haynes won't be a factor in that calculus. Adding Haynes goes beyond any needed insurance for 2026, too.
As the 81st overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Haynes is in his third season in the league and, accordingly, will be under contract for the 2027 season. It gives the Dolphins another young, developmental player who will be here next year. That is, of course, so long as the Dolphins want him here. It's quite similar to the trade for OT Caedan Wallace, which Miami executed in August.
Haynes will now try to work himself into the mix with the Dolphins. And rookie guard DJ Campbell, the Dolphins' casualty on the 53-man roster, is left in limbo. I would suspect he's destined for the practice squad when it is all said and done. But other teams will have their say in that - just as the Dolphins had their say in Haynes not landing in Baltimore.
