Miami opened Jets week with encouraging news at quarterback, right guard and cornerback. New York began with greater uncertainty in its backfield and edge rotation.
Quarterback Malik Willis was listed with a right thumb injury but practiced fully Wednesday. His participation indicates the injury did not prevent him from handling the complete workload. Willis remains expected to start Sunday.
Right guard Jonah Savaiinaea also practiced fully after an ankle injury forced him from the Cincinnati game. That is an important development against a Jets defense with 17 sacks. Jarrett Kingston remains an experienced contingency, but a full practice puts Savaiinaea on track to reclaim his starting position.
Cornerback JuJu Brents , listed with a heel injury, was a full participant. Linebackers Jordyn Brooks and Jackson Woodard also practiced fully despite foot and ankle issues. Their progress strengthens a defense preparing for Garrett Wilson, Omar Cooper Jr. and a Jets rushing attack that may again rely on Braelon Allen.
Walking Wounded Still Limping About
Miami's only Wednesday nonparticipant was cornerback Reese Taylor, who continues to deal with a quadriceps injury. Long snapper Tucker Addington, edge rusher Rob Beal Jr., receiver Caleb Douglas, tight end Will Kacmarek, safety Kyle Louis and running back Jaylen Wright were limited.
Douglas' ankle remains one of the more significant offensive questions. He has seven catches for 113 yards in two games and would add a vertical element to a passing attack averaging only two touchdowns through five games. Wright's foot and Kacmarek's hamstring also affect the depth behind Gordon and Dulcich.
Hurt Jets
The Jets held Hall out Wednesday because of a quadriceps injury. Kene Nwangwu missed practice with a knee problem, increasing the potential importance of Allen. Linebacker Kiko Mauigoa and edge rusher Joseph Ossai also did not participate because of quadriceps and ankle injuries. Veteran linebacker Demario Davis and defensive lineman Harrison Phillips received rest days.
Receiver Adonai Mitchell, guard Dylan Parham, edge rusher Will McDonald IV and defensive lineman T'Vondre Sweat were limited. Parham's knee affects New York's interior protection, while McDonald and Ossai influence a pass rush built to attack Miami's protection.
No game-status designations were assigned Wednesday. Thursday's progression matters: players moving from limited to full are trending toward availability, while a second missed practice would raise concern. Friday's report will provide the official out, doubtful and questionable labels.
