It has been a very rough start to the 2026-27 season for the Miami Heat . The team entered the season with lofty expectations as a true Eastern Conference contender but those predictions may need to be tinkered with as the team has lost the first three games to open the new season.
It started on Wednesday when the team lost by 25 points at home to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Minnesota is a good team, having added guard LaMelo Ball to pair up with MVP contender Anthony Edwards. Then, the Heat lost to the Detroit Pistons on Friday after Detroit mounted a comeback against the Boston Celtics on Tuesday. The Pistons are one team who should directly be competing with Miami for a high-end playoff seed in the East.
Losing to the Timberwolves and Pistons can make sense as the Heat are starting to slowly become acclimated with the whole new-look roster. However, the Heat looked at their absolute worst on Saturday when they lost on the road to the injury-plagued Charlotte Hornets. The Hornets were without guard Coby White and young star Kon Knueppel and still won. The Heat trailed by 21 heading into the fourth quarter before mounting an almost-complete comeback. Giannis Antetokounmpo fouled out after 24 minutes and the team was simply outplayed for almost the whole game.
During a recent appearance on Amazon Prime's studio show, Heat legend Udonis Haslem shared his thoughts on Miami at the moment after their sluggish start and pledges to speak with the team and help them wherever he can.
"It's gonna be honest," Haslem said. "That's for damn sure. We start with the leadership. Gotta talk to my captains. That's where I'll start."
Despite being retired for three years, Haslem has remained a big part of the Heat's current culture. After retiring, he immediately was hired by Miami to hold the role of vice president of basketball development, where continues to work today.
Now, Haslem's comments brings up the question: Who will he talk to first? Bam Adebayo is the team's captain and Haslem has served as a mentor for him through the years. Adebayo has struggled early on this season and he and Antetokounmpo have yet to find their footing on the court together.
There were questions throughout the offseason about how Antetokounmpo and Adebayo would fit together on the court and so far, it has not looked pretty. However, the team is filled with veterans who have plenty of experience along with being led by a coach who is one of the most renowned in the league. There should be faith in this team to put it together and get back on track.
