Miami (FL) football delivered the massive offseason addition of landing quarterback Darian Mensah . Yet Ty Simpson entered the picture momentarily for the Hurricanes.
Chris Hummer of CBS Sports confirmed that the National Championship Game runner-up came close to landing the Alabama star.
"Miami had interest in Alabama's Ty Simpson after he declared for the NFL Draft, but a lucrative offer wasn't enough to bring him back to college," Hummer shared. "Simpson, unlike [Carson] Beck a year prior, remained in the draft."
The now former Crimson Tide star is learning the Los Angeles Rams ' offense after the team drafted him 13th overall. Mensah still remains one of the biggest College Football Transfer Portal moves of 2026. The Hurricanes even landed him via Atlantic Coast Conference rival Duke through their enticing NIL offer.
Simpson wasn't the only other high-profile name linked to Miami, though. Washington dual-threat passer Demond Williams Jr. rose as another mentioned name. However, Williams helped shoot that down by staying at UW.
Miami needed to move swiftly after striking out on landing some notable portal names: Brendan Sorsby (joined Texas Tech), Drew Mestermaker (joined Oklahoma State), Josh Hoover (landed with national champ Indiana), and Dylan Raiola (went from Nebraska to Oregon).
Head coach Mario Cristobal and the 'Canes opted to stay within the ACC to land the highest profile name in Mensah. His arrival fuels renewed national title chatter for Miami. The school seeks to end its more than two-decade championship dry spell and redeem themselves from the IU loss.
