- Miami v New England: Jeff Hafley’s Best and Worst Decisions
Just as the rookies and young players on the Miami Dolphins roster are learning the ropes of the National Football League, Head Coach Jeff Hafley, in his first year at the helm, is learning as well. The rookie head coach's post-game review should start with a distinction – a bad outcome does not automatically prove a bad coaching decision. Miami's 24-19 loss to New England included successful sequences, missed opportunities and unanswered questions about the second-half response. A useful evaluation identifies what worked and where the staff needs a clearer explanation.
Best: Managing the final offensive possession of the first half.
Miami put together an 11-play, 70-yard touchdown drive, ending with Malik Washington' s 1-yard scoring catch. In his postgame remarks, Hafley explained that the Dolphins wanted to use the clock while moving the ball. The sequence supplied a concrete example of offensive execution serving the game situation.

That is the kind of decision worth preserving in the next game plan: understand the clock, sustain the possession and finish with a touchdown. It does not require claiming every call was ideal. The completed drive itself is the evidence that Miami's approach produced the intended scoring opportunity before the break.
Best: Addressing the penalty without making a public punishment announcement.
Hafley briefly removed Ollie Gordon II after his third-quarter unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Afterward, he kept their conversation private while accepting responsibility for teaching the running back how to react. The public response focused on correcting the situation rather than speculating about disciplinary measures.

Worst outcome requiring review: Failing to build on the halftime lead.
Miami went into the break ahead 13-3 but could not sustain its offensive success as New England rallied. Hafley described the situation as an opportunity to learn how to put opponents away. The staff needs to identify which responses were available and why subsequent possessions did not provide the same control.
Worst outcome requiring review: The explosive-pass response.
New England scored on touchdown passes of 43 and 48 yards in the second half. Those plays warrant questions about coverage, pursuit and handling extended plays. They do not, without assignment-level evidence, establish which specific coverage call was wrong or which coach should receive sole blame.

Hafley's initial explanation emphasized missed opportunities rather than a wholesale change in coverage. His staff's follow-up should supply the details that broad diagnosis leaves open. Readers deserve an explanation of how Miami intends to limit the same breakdowns, not an invented reconstruction of private coaching decisions.
The assessment is therefore conditional rather than a letter grade. Miami demonstrated useful clock management and an immediate response to a controllable penalty. Its second-half offense and explosive-play defense still demand correction. The strongest coaching answer will be a specific adjustment that survives the next momentum swing.
